6. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Release: 2010 | Director: Edgar Wright | Streaming service: Not included in any subscription, but available for purchase or rental from the usual providers (like Apple and Amazon)
What kind of film is this? Scott Pilgrim, played by Michael Cera, meets Ramona Flowers and immediately falls in love. But he has one problem: he must fight against her ex-boyfriends to win her over. The film is based on the comic series of the same name.
The film is colorful, action-packed, and charming. Each fight is a different spectacle, and fans of video games can spot some references here. This is framed by the typical Wright editing style, which perfectly fits the theme and the source material.
There is now also an animated series on Netflix based on the comic titled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Another recommendation from director Edgar Wright can be found here: I avoided a film by a great director because I thought it was cheesy – I was wrong
7. Unbreakable
Release: 2000 | Director: M. Night Shyamalan | Streaming service: Disney+
What kind of film is this? In a tragic accident, only the security guard David, played by Bruce Willis, survives out of 131 passengers. He then meets Elijah Prince, who tries to convince him that he has superpowers.
Unbreakable is considered one of the best superhero films of all time. Bruce Willis acts as well in this film as he possibly does in no other. He is restrained and conveys a certain melancholy. Unbreakable also strongly deals with the concept of superheroes in a realistic manner.
