Once again, April 1st has made its mark on the gaming world. Some pranks have truly succeeded. Here we present a few that you shouldn’t miss.
April 1st has always been known as a day of jokes and pranks. Developers like to use this day to lead their players by the nose or throw in a few quirky updates. The following online games have certainly made the most of the opportunity.
Overwatch wide-eyed
This is what happened in Overwatch: The hero shooter Overwatch is known for its comic-like design. But on April 1st, the developers tweaked the graphics – specifically: the eyes of pretty much everything and everyone.
And suddenly all heroes in Overwatch had googly eyes – which looked pretty ridiculous, but also fantastic. Because when even Hanzo’s ultimate flies at you with huge eyes – you can see how successful the new graphics update is. Or can you?
Call of Duty sets a false trail
This is what happened in Call of Duty: “Nice to play a round of Shipment 24/7″, maybe some CoD player thought. After all, it’s one of the most popular modes in the game, and it was announced in the currently selected playlist: “Total Shipment. Come on in. But just so you know: penalties apply for quitting.”
Sounds trustworthy. Right?
Unfortunately, no, players had to realize – because the playlist threw one onto the rather unpopular map Piccadilly. Shipment, however, is hidden behind another playlist. A sneaky move – but also quite funny! And the prank was not the only thing packed in the playlist update.
Guild Wars 2 – Overrun by cats
What was going on in Guild Wars 2? Basically, everything as usual. Except for the huge… cats? That’s right! Because in Guild Wars 2, players found a letter from the “King of all Cats” (contents: Meow meow meow, meow meow… and so on), which came with a few potions.
These spawned some small kittens around you. And a few absolutely gigantic creatures in the Guild Wars 2 world.
The game also delivered some completely serious patch notes. These included, for example, that newly spawned bosses would now get name additions like “the Second” or “Jr.”, and certain NPCs would now complain to you that you never call or come by. Sounds like a sensible update!
PUBG – Fantasy Royale
This is what happened in PUBG: Unicorns usually fit better in the Fortnite world than in PUBG, but on April 1st, PUBG probably thought: A little fantasy never hurts.
However, “Fantasy” was taken literally, which is why typical fantasy classes like Barbarians and Wizards as well as Unicorn Motorcycles wandered around the newly named “Dragon’s Isle”. At least in the special mode “Fantasy Royale”.
There was also a pretty ridiculous trailer:
Star Citizen flattens everything
This is what happened in Star Citizen: The Earth is flat? Not really – but almost every planet in Star Citizen will be now. At least, if you believe the developers. Because of a phenomenon called “The Flattening”, everything will be flat starting from the next update. And there are also scientific explanations.

According to the developers, players shouldn’t worry about gameplay. Sure, one could fall off the edge of a planet now, but that’s just more realistic.
The atmosphere of the planets will, logically, be maintained by magical domes. And while they are sure that gravity is fundamentally a lie of old secret societies, games need physics. Therefore, the “gravity” within the magical domes will feel “normal”, according to the developers.
By the way, the entire lore of the game will be thrown out the window. This makes the realistic survival aspect of the game feel a little more real!
War Thunder takes off
This is what is happening in War Thunder: Normally, War Thunder players roll through the desert with tanks and engage in exciting battles! But on April 1st, everything changed in War Thunder! Players now floated through space with spaceships and engaged in thrilling battles.
War Thunder was promptly transformed into “Space Thunder”. And you can see what it looks like here:
Pokemon GO – Tricksters and Jokers
This is what is happening in Pokémon GO: The developers of Pokémon GO are not on a prank this time, but they did not want to let April 1st pass by unnoticed. In keeping with the theme of the day, funny and disguise Pokémon like Flunschlik, Mogelbaum, Tarnpignon, or Ditto are around for a week.
In the new event there are also a few new shinies – so the event is definitely worth it for the players.
