Rank 1: Experiments with FEV

Our rank 1 encompasses several experiments, as they all relate to the FEV, or Forced Evolutionary Virus. This substance dates back to the time before the Great War and was developed for use against enemy soldiers.
FEV transforms those who are exposed to it and leads to sometimes severe mutations. In Fallout, the substance reappears time and again, often in connection with experiments. Very prominently, there are the trials of a creature named “The Master”, which wants to use FEV to create a new race in the wasteland. He breeds an army of super mutants.
Also important: In Vault 87, the government and Vault-Tec try to improve the virus. The Vault residents are imprisoned and deliberately exposed to the FEV. The result is not only super mutants, but also centaurs or other failed mutations.
These are just two examples that show: Experiments with FEV lead to pure body horror and are among the most atrocious things that can be done to humans in the Vaults and in the wasteland. Especially the large-scale, targeted use for creating new races gives the Forced Evolutionary Virus first place in this ranking.
