Ashes of Creation – Big Vision, Mundane Problems
Genre: MMORPG | Platform: PC | Release: Unknown, speculation points to 2023/2024 (currently playable intermittently in alpha)
This is Ashes of Creation: The MMORPG aims to continue where Everquest Next failed. With clever ideas, AoC wants to create a simulated world that reacts to players’ actions, creating new situations that players then must respond to.
The core of this idea is the “Node system.” When players perform certain actions near a node, the node changes: For example, if there is a lot of activity around a village and players are actively fishing, gathering wood, or hunting, the village can evolve into a city. However, all this civilization could awaken a sleeping dragon.
And the next adventure begins.
This is how development has gone so far: Ashes of Creation is the baby of Steven Sharif, a self-made millionaire. He built an office in San Diego and hired developers, many of whom previously worked at Daybreak Games on Everquest Next.
Sharif is ambitious in his ideas and goals, using a controversial affiliate program that allows YouTubers to benefit financially from positively reviewing Ashes of Creation because players coming through their link to the game generate money for them. Additionally, Sharif seeks confrontation with established gaming media.
From the outside, it seemed as if the development of Ashes of Creation was progressing well until around 2018. We at MeinMMO said in early 2019: Oh, Ashes of Creation looks like a structured indie MMORPG in development. But shortly thereafter, the MMORPG took a wild turn.
The team detached a standalone battle royale mode “Apocalypse” and made it playable on Steam.
A bit disillusioning are the release plans for Ashes of Creation:
- In August 2018, the release was actually announced for 2019, and a publishing partner had already been introduced.
- But at the beginning of 2020, it seemed as if the release was further away than ever.
- Throughout 2020, the Ashes of Creation team turned things around and suddenly convinced with great gameplay.
- Ultimately, an alpha took place from July 9 to 11, which was not subject to an NDA. A lot of new information about Ashes of Creation came to light. Therefore, the game has much potential, but it is still years away from a release, as testers said.
- In November 2021, it was announced that the game will be switched to Unreal Engine 5.
This is Ashes of Creation at best: An innovative MMORPG that does many things differently than the current best and most successful online role-playing games. The core idea with the nodes and “storytelling through the environment” sounds interesting and coherent. MMORPG fans have been dreaming of this since Everquest Next whetted our appetites.
This could be the “fresh blood” that MMORPG fans are hoping for. Surely, Ashes of Creation won’t appeal to the classic “theme park” fans, but as an “MMORPG for advanced players,” it could have success.
This is Ashes of Creation at worst: A game that gets bogged down in details and wears itself out. There are countless things that can ruin an MMORPG, from the interface, performance, technical issues, or game concepts.
Ashes of Creation will also use a subscription model: The MMORPG must captivate players with excitement, long-term motivation, and good gameplay to keep them engaged; otherwise, subscribers will quickly drop off like Wildstar in 2014.
One would have wished that Ashes of Creation had more to show in 2022 than an early alpha and a battle royale mode – even though the developers emphasize how important the mode is for testing.
This is planned for 2022: The coronavirus has disrupted some plans for Ashes of Creation. Currently, there are no concrete dates for 2022 – one can probably assume that Alpha-1 will continue to run sporadically and be expanded.
In recent months, Ashes of Creation has been unusually quiet, as many updates were received when the NDA was lifted in summer. The transition to Unreal Engine 5 will probably take some time and could lead to short-term delays, but in the long run, it should benefit the development of the MMORPG.
