Skyforge – could be good, could be average
Skyforge is the MMORPG with a rather exotic background that we can really deal with next. It is being developed by a Russian team with high effort and is currently somewhere in the limbo of stress tests and closed betas.
Skyforge has high production quality, also some interesting concepts, but little unique features; there are only a few distinguishing characteristics, aside from the “you can become a god” premise. Skyforge feels like a pizza with everything. It has borrowed game systems from various other MMOs. The class system is reminiscent of Final Fantasy XIV, the combat system of DC Universe Online, there’s a large dash of Guild Wars 2 in the quest mix and zone design; in general, the gameplay orientation is aligned with Asian MMOs.
The parts of Skyforge that we have seen so far are solid and sound reasonable. However, there aren’t any outrageous new features that would make your eyes widen. And reports from the beta sound like “solid, could be something, but doesn’t knock anyone’s socks off right now.”
Conclusion: This doesn’t sound like the next big thing, but maybe that’s also an opportunity. Hardly anyone connects huge expectations with the free-to-play game. So far, they have done everything right in Russia. It will still take several months before more players can access Skyforge and take a closer look. Perhaps a small hype will develop then. So far, it has completely sailed under the gaming mainstream’s radar.
The downside of Skyforge is that it doesn’t really bring anything “truly fresh” to the genre but promises a well-crafted theme park with enough elements for everyone. Whether many people are still longing for that after the disappointments in 2014 remains to be seen.
