3. Tyrande Whisperwind
Tyrande Whisperwind is one of the oldest living characters from World of Warcraft – after all, she lived during the War of the Ancients over 10,000 years ago.
She became the High Priestess of Elune, but that doesn’t mean she just walks around in dresses and speaks blessings – priestesses among the Night Elves are extremely well-trained warriors who have also been trained in handling a variety of weapons. They can especially use bows and glaives, in addition to the devastating magic they master.
During “Battle for Azeroth,” she underwent the ritual that transformed her into the Night Warrior and granted her the powers of the “dark side of the moon” – a process that, while bringing immense power, typically leads to death after a relatively short time.
The Moon Goddess Elune herself intervened in Shadowlands and briefly made Tyrande her own avatar to speak with her sister, the Winter Queen. Afterwards, the powers of the Night Warrior were sealed away by Tyrande, ensuring that the current danger was averted.
Even if Tyrande is sometimes not enough to solve a problem – she has the Archdruid Malfurion Stormrage by her side, who is also one of the most powerful beings in Azeroth.
2. Aegwynn
Aegwynn, also known as “Magna Aegwynn,” was a guardian of Tirisfal and the mother of the later “last guardian” Medivh. She was long regarded as one of the most powerful sorceresses ever, and certainly the most powerful human sorceress.
She was not only extremely powerful but also quite clever. Because normally, a guardian is chosen by the archmages in Dalaran. However, Aegwynn devised a plan to bear a child and then raise it herself to become the next guardian.
Thus, she seduced the mage Nielas Aran, had his child, and later gave birth to her son – Medivh.
However, Aegwynn is also the only being from Azeroth that was able to confront Sargeras in direct combat – albeit only in the form of an avatar. She defeated the Lord of the Burning Legion and imprisoned him in an ancient temple of Elune – which has since been known as the “Tomb of Sargeras.”
Aegwynn lost a great deal of her power with the birth of her son Medivh, which she inherited to her son. However, Aegwynn did not know at the time that a shard of the essence of the conquered Sargeras had nested in her and had already begun to manipulate Medivh. This would lead years later to Medivh opening the Dark Portal and bringing the orcish Horde to Azeroth – the beginnings of Warcraft I.
1. Queen Azshara
The arguably most powerful woman to ever walk Azeroth is Queen Azshara. Not only was she the leader of the Kaldorei Empire, which nearly spanned the entire known world, but she was also the most powerful sorceress that ever existed.
Not only was she adored nearly fanatically by her own people but she was also feared by powerful demons like Mannoroth. The Pit Lord wanted to destroy Azshara after a “disturbing” comment, but she effortlessly parried his attack. In that moment, the demon realized that he could do absolutely nothing to Azshara and that her magic was so powerful that other demons revered her. Mannoroth estimated that only the most powerful creatures of the Burning Legion – such as Archimonde or Kil’jaeden – could stand against Azshara.
Accordingly, Azshara was also quite self-confident, as she envisioned herself as the future wife of Sargeras to rule over Azeroth and the cosmos.
Even though Azshara later entered into a pact with N’Zoth, she never submitted to his will. After the end of Battle for Azeroth, Azshara has disappeared and is searching for the “true throne of power.” It is only a matter of time before we see her again in the course of the “World Soul” story.
Another very powerful and extremely mysterious woman is Xal’atath. It is not yet completely clear what kind of being she actually is, but her story already gives many hints that she also has the potential to be one of the most powerful women in Azeroth.
