Dorn or the Slow Wait for Death
As Bungie gradually began to break the dominance of auto rifles in the Crucible, another, almost forgotten weapon class came to the foreground: hand cannons.
The triumvirate of Dorn, Hawkmoon, and The Last Word would henceforth dominate the multiplayer mode of Destiny 1. Hawkmoon could take down opposing Guardians with a single shot from great distances due to its exotic perks, The Last Word was regarded as the primary weapon with the fastest TTK (if used correctly), and Dorn could eliminate Guardians with just two shots due to its damage over time effect.
Specifically, Dorn was the number one choice towards the end of Year 1, as it did not require luck like Hawkmoon and was not as skill-dependent as The Last Word.
The quest that had to be completed to obtain this weapon was considered difficult to master, as you had to perform strongly in the Crucible to not lose mission progress.
Once you finally got the Dorn, every Guardian was history after just two headshots. The reason for this was the damage over time. It effectively finished off opponents regardless of how much armor the victim had. Therefore, the victims of Dorn could only slowly wait for death while the opposing shooter turned to other enemies.
Bungie temporarily put the weapon on hold only to announce its return with much fanfare. Artifacts were introduced into the game that reduced damage over time. However, as the weapon was simultaneously weakened, it would never again have a significant role to play.
