Gjallarhorn – Beauty in Destruction
Not only did many Guardians struggle with the pronunciation of this weapon – the “G” remains silent – but also with the fact that as an exotic rocket launcher, it occupied the only exotic slot.
When Xur made his second appearance, he had the Gjallarhorn with him, but did not manage to convince many players to buy it. Only a few wanted to fill their exotic weapon slot with a rocket launcher back then. Rarely have so many players been so wrong.
Because the weapon could trivialize boss fights and crush every enemy underfoot. The reason for this were the exotic cluster missiles, which massively increased the damage output. Who needed strategy when you could defeat the big bosses alone with the Gjallarhorn?
From then on, it became a given to have the weapon in your inventory. Players were often excluded from raid activities if they couldn’t show up with the Gjallarhorn.
Those who couldn’t find the weapon after extensive searching had to wait a long time until Xur offered it again. The suffering lasted a full 11 months. On August 14, 2015, it finally happened: Xur sold Gjallarhorn!
The day went down in history as “Gjallarhorn Day” and is still celebrated by the community today. The Gjallarhorn became a cult that attracted attention beyond the community’s borders.
Bungie temporarily removed the weapon to the dismay of players. With the “Rise of Iron” expansion, it was supposed to make its comeback. Unfortunately, Bungie reduced the damage of the cluster missiles in the meantime. The rocket launcher remained very powerful, but could no longer shine as it did in the early days of Destiny.
