On October 1, 2013, GTA Online was released – at that time only for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. That was six years ago. Six years during which Rockstar continued to provide new content for the online part.
New content often comes in the form of free DLCs. They bring new cars, properties, missions, and features to make money in the game. Especially the ways to earn money are important. This allows players to access the content of the expansions without having to spend real money.
What are we listing here? We have looked at the DLCs and listed the five most important expansions for you here. The term “important” relates to how significant their impact was on the online game and how necessary the innovations were. We measured this by the community’s reactions on social media. The personal opinion of the author also influenced this top-5 list.
Cunning Stunts – Important Addon for Racers
What content did Cunning Stunts bring? The update was announced by Rockstar Games as “a whole new kind of competition.” 20 new stunt races specifically for Rocket Voltic, Ruiner 2000, and Blazer Aqua. 13 new vehicles made their way into the game with the update.
When was it released? July 12, 2016
Why was this important? This expansion was particularly important for players who were tired of the monotonous vehicle races in GTA Online. With Cunning Stunts came at least 20 new tracks where you defy gravity, drive through colorful tunnels, jump over abysses with ramps, or transform into boats or planes during the race.
In addition, there were a ton of cars, additional race tracks, and racing suits to give it all the necessary feeling. Racers fully enjoyed this content, and there were finally reasons to regularly sign up for races again. For racing enthusiasts, this update was immensely important.
Further Advances in Finance and Felony
What content did Finance and Felony bring? Through this DLC, CEO work returned to GTA Online. It became possible to buy offices including assistants, steal and sell goods, and earn money in other ways as a VIP. Some of the most luxurious vehicles, such as the Volatus, entered the game as a result, totaling 14 vehicles. A few weeks after the release of the DLC, the popular Grotti X80 Proto became available at the dealers in GTA Online.
When was it released? On June 7, 2016.
Why was this important? This DLC could be considered the most important DLC that laid the foundation for easy money-making. Many players still use the CEO work to make money today. Through the update, players could buy office buildings and warehouses. The goods they grind are stored in the warehouse. The selling price then increases exponentially with the goods in stock. Later, players sell the stuff for several million GTA dollars.
For players, this update was so important because it finally provided new ways to make money. This variety brought fun. Additionally, poorer players could do bodyguard work without having to buy the expensive properties.
Heists – Heists
What content did the Heists update bring? This DLC finally made it possible to participate in heists in the online mode.
When was it released? On March 10, 2015.
Why was this important? Especially at the beginning of the online mode of GTA 5, the game struggled with limited content. The heists were announced early on in a gameplay trailer in 2013 but needed more work.
When they finally arrived a year and a half later, the heists were a significant update for players.
The special co-op missions for up to 4 players brought in a lot of money if successful. For the first time, players could quickly earn a lot of money and had to show much more teamwork than in the monotonous contact missions. Suddenly, there was a role selection, and players could showcase if they excelled as a driver or shooter. Heists remain popular to this day, and players are constantly invited to join them in online sessions. Only in 2017 did the new Doomsday Heist come into the game.

Bikers – Motorcycle Clubs in Los Santos
What content did Bikers bring? The Bikers update brought motorcycle clubs, new ways to make money, co-op gameplay, properties, and new motorcycles to the game.
When was it released? On October 4, 2016.
Why was this important? Fans had been eagerly anticipating a motorcycle update since the release of GTA Online. After all, one knew from the GTA 4 expansion “The Lost and Damned” with the biker gang “Lost” that Rockstar Games has a soft spot for two-wheeled machines.
This add-on brought 21 new vehicles to the game: motorcycles, trikes, quads, and also two cars. Included among the vehicles is the Tron bike “Nagasaki Shotaro“. But not only the vehicles played an important role.
As a biker boss, you can buy businesses that process coke, heroin, counterfeit money, and more. You acquire the goods for your helpers (NPCs), who process everything while you simply play in a session. After a certain waiting time, you can sell the product for profit.
The add-on was important because it fulfilled the desire for biker content and provided new ways to earn money in GTA Online.
Casino Update – The Diamond Casino and Resort
What content did the Casino update bring? This update finally opened the casino, which had been closed since the launch in 2013. Along with it came a plethora of new cars that are being released gradually. There is also the possibility to gamble with poker, blackjack, or slot machines. Even horse racing is included. The update also features new missions for the online mode.
When was it released? On July 23, 2019.
Why was this important? This release was especially important to give players something they had been waiting for a long time. Since the online mode started in 2013, the casino remained closed. In the following months and years, the “Opening Soon” sign was repeatedly in one’s sight at the casino parking lot. However, this “soon” was prolonged for a long time.
Gameplay-wise, there were cool contents, such as the Lucky Wheel, where you can win the rarest cars in the game.

What are the best money DLCs? Looking at the DLCs listed above, it’s about money and the emotions connected to the content. For pure money-making, without emotions, we would choose a different selection:
- After Hours – The nightclub DLC that also provides reasonable ways for solo players to earn money safely
- Import/Export – The best way to actively make money in the game by stealing cars, tuning them, and then selling them for a high price
