Boot Camp Blues – Or: Passierschein A38
What kind of quest is this? The Boot Camp Blues is part of the original main quest line from Fallout 76. It takes you across the world and requires various tasks to ultimately join the Steel Brotherhood.
This is important to access the Brotherhood’s bunkers and ultimately fight the brand beasts. However, it’s not as simple as just signing up for the military…
The quest starts with you needing to complete basic training for military service in Camp McClintock. This is nothing special and only requires a few more or less easy tasks. The challenge is the bureaucratic paperwork that follows.
What makes it so special? In order to be recognized as a soldier, you need a military ID. You can get it at the town hall of Watoga, where all the responsible robots are still on duty, dutifully. Too dutifully.
You must follow the rules and as the order requires, pull numbers and wait to be called. Unfortunately, there are some other people in front of you who have been dead for a while, and therefore take a long time to potentially not show up.
On top of that, the bots are not exactly the fastest. And to inform you that the paperwork is incomplete, they take quite a while.
Thus, the quest drags on forever, but it has a unique storytelling style that can be rather unsettling for us German bureaucracy fanatics. However, as a reward, you will be accepted into the Steel Brotherhood, which will soon actually appear in Appalachia.

Where do I find it? The Boot Camp Blues is part of the main quest line of the original game. You receive it automatically when you follow the story about the Responders, the Free States, and later the Enclave. The very first quests in the line are “Reclamation Day” and “First Contact.”
