Housing plays an important role for many MMORPG fans, as they can build their own home thanks to this feature, allowing for a deeper immersion in the world. While WoW is currently one of the most successful games that does not offer such a function, there are various good alternatives. We present to you the five MMORPGs with the best housing systems.
What is this list about? In this list, we present to you the MMORPGs that offer the best housing systems in the genre. These, however, come in very different forms:
- In some games, you can build your house completely freely
- In others, you can freely decorate your instantiated house
- Some even offer really strong bonuses outside of the houses
We reveal what the various housing systems offer and how elaborate the feature is in the respective games.
How was the list created? The list was originally compiled by Alexander Leitsch and updated by our MMORPG expert Karsten Scholz. Both have played all the games mentioned here for dozens of hours and explored the respective housing systems. The order was chosen to provide as much variety as possible.

What options does housing offer? ESO relies on an instantiated housing system. Therefore, anyone can own any house, entirely at their discretion. The MMORPG offers various sizes from small guest rooms to their own estates. The houses are located in various places within the vast game world of Tamriel.
- Your first house is obtained through a quest; later, you can buy larger houses. Houses incur a one-time fee only.
- In total, there are well over 60 different houses – in May 2024, you can even earn a fancy oasis as an easy-to-obtain sign-up reward.
- You can craft furniture for your house yourself or buy special items in the shop. There are thousands of decorations.
- You can hold PvP duels in your houses.
- Since Update 43, the home showcase feature has been introduced. The new feature for private homes allows you to find, visit, share, and recommend the homes of other players.
What gameplay advantages does housing bring? Through housing in ESO, you receive:
- Additional storage space
- Your own crafting stations
- A travel point to move faster through the world
- You can place items like Mundus Stones to collect buffs from there
What kind of game is this? The Elder Scrolls Online is an MMORPG that primarily focuses on telling good stories. There are plenty of quests and every year new content in the form of updates, DLCs, and the annual chapter that bring fresh content, systems, and improvements.
The game is also characterized by the fact that you can experience adventures anywhere in the world with every level. It does not matter whether you first dive into the campaign of the base game or into the stories of the various chapters.
Moreover, the MMORPG can be excellently played solo. Here, the dynamic scaling helps, as do the new companions introduced with Blackwood. Other highlights include the truly vast game world of ESO, the multitude of dungeons, and the PvP mode Cyrodiil, where you fight in large groups for castles.
2025 is, by the way, a transition year for ESO. The developers want to break the old cycle of DLCs, patches, and chapters and switch to a seasonal system. You can read more about it here: Gold Road was the last chapter for Elder Scrolls Online; from 2025, everything will be new.
Who is ESO generally interesting for? Those looking for good stories from the world of Elder Scrolls and who want to experience them alone or together with other players are in the right place with ESO. Especially the full and very well-done voice acting in German is a plus. The battles are action-packed and there is always something to do in ESO.
However, the game can sometimes become a bit monotonous, as the gameplay of the quests can quickly become predictable. There has also recently been a lack of fresh ideas and innovations. Additionally, performance and balance issues repeatedly arise in PvP. Here are some reasons why now is a good time to start: 5 reasons why you should start with the MMORPG ESO now.
