1. NBA 2K20
| Release | September 6, 2019 |
| Developer | Visual Concepts |
| Genre | Basketball Simulation |
| Platform | PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch |
How does it play? In the basketball simulation, it is mainly about experiencing the NBA itself. This is done with teams and players you know from reality or your own digital creations.
New in NBA 2K20 is the inclusion of the WNBA, the women’s basketball league of North America. This includes 12 teams and over 140 players.
There is a career mode with a storyline that takes place on and off the court. In “My Career”, you will experience a star-studded cast featuring names like Idris Elba, Rosario Dawson, and other current and past NBA stars.
If you want, you can take control of an entire franchise in “My GM / My League” and build a roster from scratch. There are new skill trees, an improved relationship system, customization options for the simulator, and optimized scouting.
How does NBA 2K20 generate revenue? Microtransactions have existed in the previous installments of the NBA series. For 2K20, they even actively promoted gambling (via YouTube). The currency Virtual Currency (VC) can be purchased and used in many game modes.
This is done in the collectible card mode My Team, where you can buy new card packs with VC, or also in the player career, where you can use VC to improve your pros’ attributes up to a certain level. VC coins can be earned with a lot of patience or bought with real money.
As GameStar reports, you can buy unfair advantages with real money in the modes My Team and My Career. Pay-to-win is said to be ever-present in the game.
Additionally, NBA2K20 itself also has to be purchased.
What interesting developments have occurred in NBA 2K20? The ratings for NBA 2K20 are particularly negative on Steam. Only 15% of the total 3,744 reviews are positive. This leads to a Steam rating of “very negative”. Players praise the solid gameplay, but the microtransactions and pay-to-win are heavily criticized. One player writes, “Casino Simulator with basketball as a side show.” (Source: Steam)
Who evaluates the top games?
The analysis of the most successful games in September 2019 comes from SuperData. This is a US-based market research company. According to their own statements, they analyze various sources to determine how much revenue the respective games generated digitally.
Can the numbers be completely trusted? This is hard to say because SuperData protects its sources. On their website, they write that they obtain information from publishers, developers, and payment service providers through protected data partnerships.
The figures from SuperData are used worldwide by gaming magazines and are regarded, along with other market research figures, as a reliable benchmark for the success of games.
