Guild Wars 2
The game world of Guild Wars 2 is also quite well thought out and debuted with an unusual system. Rather than just following a generic hero, players can define their character’s background during character creation. Are you a noble human? Which of the gods have you dedicated yourself to? What decisive incident happened in your childhood?
These decisions influence your first hours of gameplay, just like the choice of race. A Sylvari experiences the game world differently than a human.
However, in the later stages, the story arcs are merged and standardized—after all, the fate of the continent Tyria is at stake. There are also decisions throughout the story, meaning replaying with a second character is worthwhile to see different nuances and perspectives.
The story of Guild Wars 2 is regularly expanded. Thanks to the “Living World,” the developers continually add story chapters. These are completely free if you log into the game at the time of release. Otherwise, you can unlock the chapters from Season 2 later with gems in the shop. Gems can be obtained for real money or in-game currency—so it is possible to play the story yourself.
Guild Wars 2 has also been Free2Play for a while—at least the base game. However, this is sufficient to experience the original campaign of the game. However, if you want to access the new areas to experience the story here as well, you have to purchase the expansions. There is no subscription fee, only a one-time purchase price for the expansions.
What the story is about: The conflict of the mortal races against the great dragon threats that want to destroy the land once more. This is spiced up with political intrigues and power struggles within their own ranks—the titular guilds.
Who the story is suited for: Fans of the first Guild Wars, friends of non-linear game worlds, and anyone who enjoys “bite-sized” stories that can be consumed in small portions.
