World of Warcraft had many raids – and even more mechanics. Here we present to you the 5 best among them.
Over the course of more than 20 years, World of Warcraft has released a lot of raids – more than 40 in total and several hundred bosses, each of which had dozens of mechanics that had to be played correctly. Although many mechanics have repeated themselves over the years or function very similarly, there are a few that have remained memorable due to their creativity or entertainment value.
In this article, we want to take a look back at 5 very special raid mechanics from the history of World of Warcraft that have remained memorable due to their creativity.
Class Calls in Blackwing Lair
One of the first bosses in World of Warcraft was the great dragon Nefarian, who could be found at the end of Blackwing Lair. Not only was this one of the few bosses with clearly separated phases that differed drastically, but also the owner of one of the most interesting raid mechanics ever, the so-called “Class Calls”.
During the fight, Nefarian called forth individual classes repeatedly, forcing the respective characters to take action:
- When Nefarian, for example, called the “Mages”, they began to transform their own allies into various animals using Polymorph.
- If Paladins were called, they suddenly granted Nefarian a blessing, making him untouchable for a few seconds.
- Warlocks suddenly summoned Infernal beasts that stunned player characters and then dealt high damage.
This way, all classes had their own mechanic – a tradition that Blizzard continued even after introducing new classes (like Death Knights or Monks).
With Dragonflight, Blizzard wanted to bring this mechanic back in the renewed fight against Nefarian, but it proved to be difficult in terms of balance, as raids would then tend to leave the “worst” classes out of the fight.
Even today, Nefarian’s “Class Calls” hold a special place in the hearts of many WoW fans. It’s also one of the few Classic mechanics that was exceptionally complex and versatile.
