Many of the currently most popular MMORPGs were released several years ago, such as WoW from 2004 or Guild Wars 2 in 2012. Recently, however, it feels like hardly any successful new titles are being released. Therefore, we are presenting you with 5 successful MMORPGs that have been released within the last 5 years.
What is this post about? We at MeinMMO look back at the last 5 years and which MMORPGs have been released during this time. The selected titles must:
- Be released in 2016 or later
- Still have playable and active servers
- There must at least still be new updates in sight
The list was oriented around the worldwide interest in games according to Google Trends in the last 90 days. The order of the titles, however, is based on the release date.

What is Blade & Soul? The Asia MMORPG was released in 2016 in the West, almost 4 years after its official release in Korea. It focuses on a lot of action and a dramatic story with a female villain.
When creating your character, you can choose from 12 different classes, with the next one already in the pipeline. The combat system relies on action-packed combos and quick reactions, whether you’re doing PvP or PvE.
PvP is also a key point, as Blade & Soul places great emphasis on it. You fight against each other in 1v1 or 3v3 matches in arenas or in a control point mode for a total of 12 players.
How has the game developed? After its release in the West, new content was quickly added, as the game was significantly lagging behind the Korean version. Additionally, the developer NCSoft tried to enter e-sports in the West.
While it has become quieter around the MMORPG in the meantime, regular updates and new classes continue to be released. However, there are also small scandals now and then, such as a major exploit in early 2020 that led to a ban wave.
Is it still worth starting the game? For 2020, a major engine update is planned, among other things. Additionally, the aforementioned new class “Sky Seer” and new dungeons will make their way into the game.
If you enjoy a mix of beat ’em up and MMORPG, are looking for action, and are not bothered by the Asian setting, you should feel at home in Blade & Soul and will still find enough players today to complete dungeons and play PvP.
