EVE Online
Developer: CCP Games | Platform: PC | Release Date: May 6, 2003 | Model: Free2Play, later with subscription | Combat System: Space Combat
What kind of game is this? The space MMORPG EVE Online has been on the market since 2003 and has stayed relevant since then. It is a sandbox game in space that offers players a lot of freedom.
One of the greatest features of the game is the ships that you can build and customize or purchase. With various categories, you can decide whether to pilot a nimble small fighter, a large freighter, or a massive battleship.
The free economy run by players and the camaraderie among gamers are the immense strengths of the game. Additionally, the world of EVE is simply huge. The galaxy features countless planets, and some players enjoy exploring everything. One of them took a whopping 10 years to explore the entire galaxy.
What does it do well in PvP? EVE Online is a game where you are constantly exposed to danger. That alone is what makes it thrilling. Through large alliances and political systems, it tells the best PvP stories ever.
This includes huge battles like the World War Bee 2, where over 800,000 euros worth of ships and goods were destroyed.
The game is divided into different zones:
- In high-sec areas, attacks on other players are punished. The in-game police maintain law and order.
- In low-sec areas, the security for players is not as high anymore and is only guaranteed at stations and jump gates. Here, robberies by pirates are common.
- Null-sec zones are essentially lawless territory. Here, player alliances battle each other in partly gigantic clashes to control entire sectors.
What does it do poorly in PvP? In massive battles, it’s not about quick reactions, but the calculations take a lot of time. This makes it feel less like fun and more like simulations.
Moreover, the strength of the ships plays an important role. These can be destroyed in combat, and not everyone is comfortable with losing a lot of their hard-earned success.
Furthermore, there has been recent criticism because the developers have raised subscription costs beyond an actual pain threshold.
Can I have fun as a PvE player too? Only to a limited extent. Many EVE players agree: without the destruction of ships, the game lacks excitement. Therefore, you always have to be prepared to get involved in PvP battles.
