Neverwinter – The best Free-2-Play MMORPG
Developer/Publisher: Cryptic/Perfect World | Release: April 30, 2013 | Model: Free-2-Play | Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X | Download: Neverwinter Homepage
What kind of game is this? Neverwinter is an MMORPG set in the eponymous city of Neverwinter in the role-playing setting of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). The city is the focal point of your adventures, and after initial scenarios in the metropolis, you will soon venture into other areas of the “Forgotten Realms,” including places like the icy wilderness of the North, the jungles of Chult, the horror setting Ravenloft, or even Hell itself!
In the game, you can choose between typical D&D races and classes. Look forward to heroes like Drow rogues, Elf mages, grim Dwarf warriors, or horned Tiefling warlocks.
Neverwinter is constantly being expanded and regularly receives new settings and expansions (“modules”) from the developers. As a Free2Play game, you can play Neverwinter for free. There are items like special mounts and additional inventory slots available in a shop, some of which you can also unlock in the game.
What are the highlights? Neverwinter features a fast action combat system that plays differently for each hero and is a lot of fun. Therefore, the grind battles against countless monsters are also quite enjoyable.
Due to the various modules, there is a lot of content from which you can freely draw and dive into without complications.
And then there’s the unique D&D flair that catches the eye of anyone familiar with the Dungeon & Dragons role-playing world right away. If you enjoy playing pen & paper, you will quickly feel at home in the Free2Play MMORPG Neverwinter.
What are the drawbacks? Neverwinter presents its scenarios and locations in modules. There is no open world; you simply travel to the respective module and are then either in the jungle, in the icy wasteland, or in Hell, where things get serious.
A free exploration of the game world, as one might find in ESO or Guild Wars 2, is not really possible here. Instead, there are linear levels and a significant amount of grind that, while fun due to the fast combat system, may not motivate every player type in the long term.
Even though you can enjoy the game for free, the in-game shop can be quite intrusive with special offers and sometimes asks quite insistently if you want to spend money.
Why is it particularly good for beginners? Neverwinter always takes you by the hand and guides you through the features of the game. Since levels and quests proceed quite linearly, you will quickly get into the game and can start playing simply and uncomplicated. If you don’t have a group, you can also tackle a lot of content alone without any problems.
Additionally, it offers a catchy and easy-to-learn action combat system that is ideal for beginners. Therefore, Neverwinter is still worth playing 8 years after its release.
