Although Harem anime generally spans all genres (like action, romance, drama, comedy, and so on), the basic constellation of characters is always similar. There is usually one male protagonist who is courted by many women. Even though this doesn’t necessarily mean that it has to be raunchy – in many cases, it is.
Nevertheless, there are also many good Harem anime, especially in the comedy domain, that are definitely worth watching. (Help, I’m being forced to write this article.)
Love Hina

In his youth, Keitaro promised a girl that he would meet her again at the University of Tokyo. However, the plan fails when he flunks the entrance exam and his life goes off the rails.
His grandmother owns a hotel, where he first settles down to study for the entrance exam in peace. However, his grandmother has already converted the former hotel into a girls’ dormitory. And as fate has it, he must now run the dormitory – and therefore live under one roof with 5 young women who are not particularly thrilled about it at the beginning.
What to expect from Love Hina: Love Hina dates back to 2000 and is now considered almost a classic. Many anime clichés of today’s Harem or Romance anime have their origins here. Particularly the “archetypical girl clichés,” like the Tsundere or Dandere, were established in the anime from this time and are hence represented in Love Hina.
The story is quite calm but definitely worth a look. A lovely, entertaining Harem anime that one can wonderfully watch “on the side”.
The World God Only Knows

Keima is known on the internet as the “God of Conquests” because he can win the heart of any girl – at least in dating simulations. He wants nothing to do with real women.
When he receives a request to prove his superiority in dating games, he hastily agrees and thereby forms a pact with a demon from hell. He now has to work with the lively Elsie to catch escaped evil souls that are hiding in the world.
But to get to these souls, he has to conquer what he hates most: the hearts of real girls, who are not as easily calculable as in video games.
What to expect from The World God Only Knows: The setting of this series is quite extraordinary and plays with many clichés. The depiction of the female “conquest targets” is particularly interesting here – they are clearly more multifaceted and complex than in many other Harem series. Especially Keima’s failures when relying on the experiences from his dating games are always enjoyable to watch – just like the moments when his plans actually work out.
The Quintessential Quintuplets

Fuutarou Uesugi is an exemplary student, but struggles with many problems. His withdrawn and initially unapproachable nature has made him few friends, and his father is heavily in debt. Salvation comes when he is asked to tutor a wealthy family.
What he does not yet realize is that he has to tutor quintuplets, all of whom are at risk of failing their classes but have little interest in studying – after all, they are the children of a wealthy family and see no need for it.
What to expect from The Quintessential Quintuplets: Quintessential Quintuplets comes with pleasantly few ecchi elements and impresses with great characters that quickly grow on you.
Each of the girls is interesting and even Uesugi does not fit the typical “no-name protagonist” whose only trait is hitting the jackpot in the ladies’ lottery. Here you can expect a lovely, light story that will make you smile repeatedly.
