Death Note is about the high school student Yagami Light. He is an elite student who is tired of the injustice of the world filled with criminals and offenses. One day, a Shinigami, a god of death, drops his notebook (the eponymous “Death Note”) to the earth out of sheer boredom, and Yagami finds it.
The people whose names are written in the notebook die.
It doesn’t take long for Yagami to use this power and begins to cleanse the world of all people committing crimes. This mass murder of offenders doesn’t remain hidden for long, and soon investigators around the world try to track Yagami down – led by the mysterious super investigator “L”.
Yagami and L engage in a long game of cat and mouse, where L tries to uncover the identity of the killer while Yagami seeks to learn L’s real name to kill him with the book.
What is the plot twist in Death Note?
The fronts in Death Note are relatively clear early on. On one side stands Yagami Light as Kira, and on the other side is the highly gifted L. It is assumed that this duel will dominate the entire anime and last until the finale. But then L dies relatively suddenly and is killed by a Shinigami. The biggest adversary of Kira dies around halfway through the anime, and that allows Kira to live out his fantasies of omnipotence and reshape the world as he wishes.
L’s death is also one of the reasons why the second half of Death Note is often considered somewhat weaker, even though the series as a whole certainly has a firm place on many top lists.
