Rank 1: New World – The open-world MMO with PvE and PvP
Genre: MMORPG | Developer: Amazon Games Studios | Platform: PC | Model: Buy2Play
What is New World? New World is an MMO from Amazon, which was originally announced as a PvP and survival game. Meanwhile, PvP is now only optional, and more PvE content is expected to be implemented. It emphasizes:
- A huge world named Aeternum.
- A dark story.
- Guild battles for fortresses.
- World bosses and hostile PvE factions that also attack fortresses.
- Player housing.
- A dynamic and action-packed combat system.
How has the development history been so far? New World was first heard about in September 2016. Back then, it was said that Amazon was working on a sandbox MMORPG. After that, it went quiet for a while:
- A first playable version of the MMO was seen at Gamescom 2018. This made many curious.
- In September 2018, the first alpha began.
- It ended in June 2019. The feedback afterwards was positive, though not overwhelming.
- In December 2019, New World announced the shift towards PvE. Not all players are pleased with this.
The potential of New World is huge
What is New World at best? At best, New World achieves a cool mix of PvE and PvP. The battles for the fortresses have great potential, and there are also some contents for PvE fans.
Thus, the game world offers an exciting story, the world bosses could be very challenging, and in housing, players can unleash their creativity. Additionally, the developers have already hinted that dungeons and raids could follow if players are interested.
What is New World at worst? At worst, the PvE is completely uninteresting and lacks long-term motivation. Then many players will likely drop out quickly.
On the other hand, PvP players might face unnecessary cuts, making New World significantly less interesting for them.
When can you play New World? New World is set to enter beta in April and should be released in May 2020.
The opinion of the MeinMMO community
- Hisuinoi: “I have pre-ordered New World and have high hopes for the game to finally receive a new setting and diversity.”
- Klarus: “I find the development [away from PvP] personally very interesting for me. The forced PvP ruins the fun for many people.”
- Evels: “I find the setting of New World interesting because it’s something different. No elves, dwarves, or orcs in a purely fictional world.”
- IchhassePvP: “Forced PvP removed, so far so good. But quests, missions, and PvE mass battles still sound pretty thin to me. And if weapons remain the only skill trees, then it’s really ‘just’ an MMO, not an RPG.”
