Isekai series are as plentiful as sand on the beach. The somehow always the same story of “a boy is taken from the real world to a fantasy world and is super strong there” is pretty worn out. At least that’s what one might think.
But “Re:Zero” stands out from the crowd. Because Subaru is not blessed with great superpowers; he is simply cursed by a witch. When he dies, that is not the end for him, but time is rewound for him – just as if he has “respawn points” like in a video game.
What sounds cool and overpowered at first glance actually leads to a lot of emotional issues. Because everything Subaru experiences with his friends in the lost time is forgotten by the other people. At the same time, he cannot tell others about his condition – and repeatedly dying is also a very traumatic experience.
Intrigues, betrayal and despair are the defining themes behind this story, which often doesn’t fit into the exaggeratedly cheerful isekai genre at all.
Unlike previous seasons, the 3rd season starts with a 90-minute episode – essentially a movie. It’s a real feel-good episode where you meet many familiar characters and also some new ones. Most of it is harmonious – until the last few minutes come and clearly show where the season is going this time.
This time, unlike usual, there are only about 10 minutes between Subaru’s “respawn point” and the great catastrophe that occurs. He has only a few moments to steer the course of the plot in ways where hopefully everyone involved survives. But as so often, appearances can be deceiving, and from a single problem quickly multiply several problems that lead to a great chaos that is difficult to decipher.
Re:Zero is not for the faint of heart. Some of the battles, injuries, and ultimately also the deaths are brutal. Re:Zero does not shy away from children and is also not gentle in dealing with tough themes.
However, it should also be clear here that one should have seen the first two seasons and preferably also the movie to understand the incidents. Otherwise, Re:Zero is a big character chaos where little seems to make sense.
The 3rd season will continue in February with the second half, but it is already clear that this season can at least convince as much as the previous two.
