Place 10 – Jetpack
What is it? The Jetpack was introduced in Season 4. It could be used to hover high above the battlefield with short bursts.
Why was it so annoying: Jetpacks were initially a lot of fun, but soon it became clear how annoying they were. Because with them, you could easily fly over any cover and shoot down the unfortunate builder from above. Taking cover was hardly worthwhile.
What happened to it? The jetpacks were removed from regular play for obvious reasons. However, they returned in special game modes, such as the Spy Games mode. Additionally, you could use the jetpack infinitely while the monsters Cattus and Doggus were fighting in Season 9.
Place 9 – Double Pump
What is it? This was not an item per se, but a gameplay mechanic. In the first seasons of Fortnite, it was possible to avoid the long reload time of the Pump Shotgun by simply having two of these weapons. You fired one weapon and instead of waiting for the reload, you switched to the second pump and shot again immediately.
Why was it so annoying: The double shotgun trick was extremely controversial at the time. Many players liked to use it and loved mowing down enemies in droves. For many, it was the only viable way to use the Pump Shotgun.
But since the trick was clearly an exploit and never intended by the developers, there were also plenty of players who found it awful to get taken down in less than a second up close.
What happened to it? After many nerfs and tweaks, Epic finally introduced a delay when swapping the Pump Shotgun. This prevents the double shotgun trick. For many players, however, the double pump was still a great thing and they still mourn its loss.
Place 8 – Submachine Gun
What is it? This was a compact SMG that fired a ton of ammunition. It was introduced in Season 5, where it was an integral part of the “Spray Meta”, meaning a style of play that was very mobile and relied on spraying fire while on the move.
Why was it so annoying: The “Spray Meta”, which already annoyed many players, was further exacerbated by the Submachine Gun. The little lead shooter was one of the most annoying weapons, being too strong at close range.
What happened to it? The Submachine Gun was eventually removed in Season 9, but returned during events.
Place 7 – Timed Missions
What is it? In Season X, Epic tried something new with the challenges. Instead of completing them at some point during the season, you had to finish them within a specific time frame.
Why was it so annoying: The problem with the timed missions was that you could miss them. Anyone who only played Fortnite sporadically or was away for a long holiday or otherwise could miss important rewards. That was annoying!
What happened to it? Since the time-limited missions were not particularly popular, they only occurred in Season X.
Place 6 – Guided Missile Launcher
What is it? This weapon was a rocket launcher that launched a controllable projectile. You could steer the rocket from a distance and aim it precisely. The Guided Missile Launcher first appeared in Season 3.
Why was it so annoying: The rocket launcher was annoying in many ways. It dealt massive explosive damage, and you could bypass cover with it and eliminate opponents who could not even fight back.
What happened to it? The launcher was removed from the game in Season 6. Later, it returned heavily nerfed, but since it was very rare and relatively weak, hardly anyone used it. It was then removed again with Patch 7.3.
