What is known about the total number of players? For the 10th anniversary of Black Desert, the officials from Pearl Abyss revealed various statistics from the past decade of the MMORPG. Among them: approximately 38 million players are said to have played Black Desert by May 2024.
It should be noted that the main game is regularly sold for a few euros in sales and sometimes even given away for free. Furthermore, the South Korean version of the game has been live since December 2014.

What kind of game is this? Black Desert is a sandbox MMORPG with one of the best combat systems in the genre and relies heavily on freedom: While there are some quests, leveling from mobs is much faster. You also won’t find a maximum level here, but from level 63 it takes agonizingly long to achieve further levels.
The economy is entirely free and determined by the players. There are eleven life skills, including gathering, fishing, and cooking, and you can build a network of NPC workers. Black Desert offers housing and you can build your own ships. You will deal with world bosses, can participate in PvP, or visit PvE dungeons.
Meanwhile, the developers are also offering so-called seasonal servers, which are particularly suitable for beginners or leveling new classes. These start regularly, have no PvP, and allow you to level up faster.
Who is this game worthwhile for? Black Desert is aimed at sandbox fans who enjoy exploring an open world and enjoying the combat system. Much of what is found in BDO is associated with grinding, such as leveling, crafting the best equipment, or setting up production chains for the economy.
However, if you are looking for a classic theme park MMORPG with an overarching story, dungeons, and raids, you will not be happy with Black Desert.
