6. Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition
Developer: Larian Studios | Release date: September 14, 2017 | Steam page: Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition
What is Divinity: Original Sin 2? The game is a fantasy RPG that relies on turn-based combat. You can play it either alone or with up to 3 other people. Alternatively, you can also play the game with a party of AI characters, all of whom have their own backstories.
In the first step, you either create your own character or choose a pre-made character. Only pre-made characters have a so-called “Origin” story with a backstory. Self-created characters do not have this and interact less with the game world.
During character creation, you can choose between different classes, such as mage, warrior, or rogue, and travel through the game world as a human, dwarf, elf, undead, or lizard.
In the story, you are thrown into a prison on a deserted island. You are a Source mage, possessing extraordinarily powerful abilities. For this reason, you have been imprisoned because the “Divine” is dead, and you are accused of attracting evil creatures from other dimensions as a powerful wizard.
Once you escape from your captivity, you journey through the world with your companions as a mage party, solving tricky puzzles and unveiling secrets. Additionally, you must prove yourself in combat situations and strategically plan your characters’ actions, as you can only perform one specific action during each round. So plan well whether you want to attack, use abilities, or move your heroes across the field.
The decisions in the story have far-reaching consequences and can lead to the flourishing or downfall of the game world. You decide alone over the fate of the entire population and have a huge influence on the game.
Here you will find a more detailed game presentation of Divinity: Original Sin 2.
If you are into extensive games with various endings, numerous decisions, and character development, you won’t want to miss the Divinity games. I played Divine Divinity (2002) and have been a fan of the series since Divinity 2: Ego Draconis (2009).
Original Sin is a classic, turn-based tactical RPG, essentially a video game adaptation of Pen and Paper. The strength lies, as with many RPGs, in the story. Original Sin 2 moved me to tears and I still listen to some of the songs from the game today.
With Original Sin 2, I also played a TRPG properly in co-op for the first time, together with my colleague Maik Schneider – who refuses to undo decisions through save games. Well… in our save file, every NPC on the tutorial island is now dead.
Larian, the creators behind Divinity: Original Sin 2, are currently making Baldur’s Gate 3. I’m very excited about that game too – simply because I’m a huge fan of Dungeons & Dragons, on which the game is based.
For whom is Divinity: Original Sin 2 worth it? Especially fans of Pen & Paper, particularly DSA or D&D, will have fun with Divinity: Original Sin 2.
Anyone who places great value on strategic gameplay, rather than just mindlessly beating hordes of enemies, will be well served here. As the game can also be played in co-op, it provides a great alternative to classic Pen & Paper evenings.
