3. Gothic 2: Gold Edition
Developer: Piranha Bytes | Release date: November 29, 2005 | Steam page: Gothic II: Gold Edition
What is Gothic 2: Gold Edition? The Gold Edition contains not only the main game Gothic 2 but also the expansion “The Night of the Raven.” The story picks up from the predecessor Gothic.
As a player, you are thrown onto a medieval island, Khorinis. There, you fight against gods, dragons, and dark forces, and must complete various tasks.
As the nameless hero, you embark on a journey filled with exploration and exciting battles. The game offers you an open world full of small details waiting to be discovered.
You are also given numerous freedoms in how you wish to shape your gameplay. You can either wander around as a glorious knight or roam the land as a bloodthirsty butcher.
Additionally, the gripping atmosphere with interesting dialogues and a good soundtrack captivates the players.
At that time, Gothic also robbed MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus of his youth, then it also became an MMO and ruined him completely.
Gothic is probably familiar to every RPG fan from Germany. The famous Ruhr area humor struck with the first part of the series and managed to build a large community. However, the involuntary excursion into the Mine Valley was surpassed by its direct successor along with the expansion: Gothic 2 – The Night of the Raven.
Gothic 2 repeated the success formula of the first part, improved and enlarged the world, but above all the controls. And with The Night of the Raven, all errors of the standard game were also eliminated, and the RPG hit from Germany was born. Personally, I no longer had any obstacles.
To this day, I have spent over 1,000 hours in Gothic 2, replaying the game countless times to truly find every dialogue option, every hidden Easter egg, and even the last NPC. For a while, I even attempted speedruns of the game. Even today, I know Khorinis like the back of my hand filled with swampweed.
With that, Gothic 2 will likely remain one of my favorite games forever. Whether it’s the memory of having thrown my mouse away in fright when I first encountered a minecrawler. Or when I, for the first time, whacked that idiot Raven in the face with Beliar’s claw. Or, or, or…
Who is the Gothic 2: Gold Edition worth it for? In game reviews, numerous comments praise Gothic as one of the absolute favorite games. Especially for long-time RPG fans, the game evokes feelings of nostalgia.
If you want to explore an open world, seek high replay value, and enjoy harsh dialogues, the Gothic 2: Gold Edition package is for you.
