5. The Matrix
The programmer and hacker Neo realizes that humanity is living in a simulation and fights in a rebellion against the machines that hold them captive.
The film presents an exciting dystopian world and addresses deep themes. The idea that human reality is merely a machine-generated simulation provides a lot of food for thought.
The philosophical core is conveyed through action-packed scenes and spectacular effects. Even today, the “Bullet Time” scene is legendary, in which protagonist Neo evades multiple bullets in an ultra-cool manner.
Here, Keanu Reeves shines in one of his cult roles and convincingly presents the story of a “normal” programmer who eventually becomes “the chosen one” of humanity.
This is what IMDb ratings say: The 2 million IMDb users give the film an average of 8.7 stars out of 10.
Fun Fact: In preparation for the scene where Neo awakens in the capsule, the lead actor Keanu Reeves lost almost 15 pounds and shaved his entire body so that the character would look as emaciated as possible.
6. Interstellar
In the film by renowned director Christopher Nolan, a group of researchers travels through a wormhole to search for a new home for humanity.
Interstellar captivates with breathtaking visuals and a touching story. Especially the depiction of space and the black hole fascinates many. Here, Interstellar draws on real scientific concepts and credibly explains the phenomena within the story.
It becomes very clear in the film that the main character Joseph Cooper is not only a pilot but also a loving father, whose relationship with his daughter Murph is portrayed movingly.
For example, the farewell between the two breaks many viewers’ hearts, where Murph pleads with her father to stay.
This is what IMDb ratings say: 1.9 million IMDb users gave a rating for the sci-fi film. Interstellar achieved an average of 8.7 stars.
Fun Fact: Originally, Steven Spielberg was supposed to direct the film, and Jonathan Nolan was tasked with writing the screenplay.
However, when the director dropped out of the project, Jonathan suggested Interstellar to his brother Christopher Nolan, as you can read here with our colleagues from Filmstarts.
