The ending of the film is particularly shocking. In a world where a group of survivors hides from the monsters in the mist, all hope seems lost. David, his son, and a few other survivors are trapped in a car amid the dangerous mist, which is running out of fuel. They see no other way to escape a painful death by the monsters than to end it themselves.
David reluctantly decides to use his last rounds to shoot his companions and his son to spare them from a worse fate. As he steps into the mist to confront his own death, the military suddenly arrives to push back the monsters and rescue the survivors – mere moments after he has taken his son’s future away.
