A family moves into a remote hotel for the winter, where a sinister presence drives the father, Jack, to violence. He succumbs to the same murderous impulse that has plagued the hotel for generations.
It is suggested in several instances that Jack is the perfect candidate for manipulation by the evil hotel. As seen in the many disturbing visions that the characters experience throughout the film, the hotel has absorbed the souls of countless victims and kept them as permanent residents of the hotel, which will now be his fate despite his death in the snow.
