MeinMMO wanted to know from you: Which death in Harry Potter broke your heart the most? Now we reveal the results. Who made it to the top?
What kind of survey was this? In this survey, we wanted to know which death in Harry Potter affected you the most. The selection was vast – after all, the series bid farewell to several characters in tragic ways.
You had the opportunity to choose up to two deaths that moved you the most. A total of 996 of you cast your votes. Additionally, you could also vote for “another” if your favorite was not on the list. In the comments, you then had the chance to mention the name of the character.
From your votes, we created a ranking – and now we show you which deaths particularly touched the MeinMMO community.

Here comes the overview of places 10-4, before we introduce you to the top 3 in detail:

Particularly the death of Dumbledore in 4th place was a heavy blow. Also, Hedwig and Fred, who deeply impacted us with their sacrifices, are represented in the top positions. And Voldemort actually made it to 7th place for you? Even ahead of Cedric? You should be ashamed. I wouldn’t have expected that.

Place 3: Sirius Black
- Result: 16 % with 196 votes
Sirius Black was more than just a godfather to Harry – he was a connection to his past, a piece of the family that Harry never got to know properly. In Sirius, Harry found not only someone who understood him but also an ally, a friend, and a father figure that he had missed all those years with the Dursleys.
Sirius was brave and never gave up. His greatest wish was to give Harry a home, a sense of safety and family that both of them missed so much. But this dream was shattered when Sirius was killed by Bellatrix Lestrange at the Ministry. As he fell through the veil, it felt like Harry was losing another piece of himself.
Place 2: Severus Snape
- Result: 17 % with 208 votes
Severus Snape – the grim teacher that we long believed to be the villain. But then the truth came. Snape dies in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 2) when Voldemort unleashes Nagini upon him, believing that Snape’s death would give him control over the Elder Wand.
His death is brutal and cold, but what comes afterward hits even deeper.
As Harry views Snape’s memories, the truth is finally revealed. His love for Lily, his loyalty to Dumbledore, and his sacrifices for Harry and the greater good made him a true hero. Everything he did – his secrets, his sacrifices, his facade – was to protect Harry and stop Voldemort.

Place 1: Dobby
- Result: 28 % with 345 votes
The little house-elf has easily taken the first place – and it surprises no one. Dobby’s death is one of the most heartbreaking moments of the entire series. He dies in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1) while rescuing Harry, Ron, and Hermione from the Malfoys’ manor. Bellatrix Lestrange throws a knife at him while they are disapparating, which ultimately fatally hits him.
Dobby’s selfless sacrifice to save Harry and his friends has brought tears to everyone – even after the 10th rewatch. His last words to Harry – “Dobby is so happy that his friend is with him” – encompass everything that made him so special: his unconditional love, his loyalty, and his pure heart.
He has immortalized himself through his actions and secured a place at the top of your hearts.
