Rank 3: Torrhen Stark, the Kneeling King
Torrhen Stark often stands in the shadow of his warlike ancestors. Yet his decision may have been the wisest in the history of the house. When Aegon the Conqueror marched south with his sisters and three fully grown dragons, Torrhen gathered 30,000 Northmen at the Trident. There he witnessed the fate of those who stood in Aegon’s way: Harrenhal was literally melted by dragonfire, and on the “Field of Fire,” thousands of soldiers died a painful death.
Rather than place his pride above the lives of his people, he sent his bastard brother to negotiate peace. Eventually, he laid down his crown at the shore of the Trident and became known as the “Kneeling King.”
Since he had given up the North’s independence, many Northmen branded him a coward. Yet it is thanks to Torrhen that his army and House Stark were able to survive.
