Shortly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be released. But what does the latest CoD installment do differently than its predecessors? What is really new? We will show you the most important changes that you can expect this year with the new Modern Warfare 2019.
In a few hours on October 25, the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. You can find all important information about the release here: When exactly is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare coming? The most important questions about the release.
Many fans and interested parties still want to know: What exactly distinguishes Call of Duty: Modern Warfare from previous series installments? Often, it is criticized that there is too little change compared to the previous year in the “Call of Duty” series.
This year, however, a lot is going to change. Below you will find the top 10 things that CoD: Modern Warfare does differently now.
With Modern Warfare, there is finally a single-player campaign again
This was the case in 2018: With Black Ops 4, Call of Duty completely forwent a single-player campaign in favor of multiplayer in 2018. This left many fans of the franchise disappointed. Some players feared that this could become a trend.
And even though the focus in Call of Duty has traditionally been clearly on the multiplayer part of the game, the story, i.e., the single-player part, has always had a loyal fan base that enjoyed the storyline. Especially the story of the Modern Warfare series was particularly popular among many.
This is how it will be with Modern Warfare 2019: This year, single-player and story lovers will also get their money’s worth. Because with Modern Warfare, Call of Duty will deliver a full-fledged single-player campaign again this year. You can once again experience an action-packed story that focuses on modern warfare through various special forces and intelligence services in current crisis areas of the present.
CoD: Modern Warfare is a reboot of the series
Does Modern Warfare build on its predecessors? Modern Warfare 2 and 3 have always continued the story of Task Force 141 around Captain Price, Ghost, or “Soap” MacTavish and consistently built on the actions of previous installments, this will change with Modern Warfare 2019.
While you will also meet some familiar faces like Captain Price and experience new stories around known characters here, you should not expect a continuation of the story from the previous Modern Warfare series. On the contrary.
This will change: With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019, the series is rebooted. This specifically means that the new Modern Warfare will be neither a sequel nor a prequel to the previous parts in terms of story. The story will now be told completely independently of the previous events of its predecessors – essentially in a new, independent interpretation of the Modern Warfare universe. Actions that occurred in Modern Warfare 1-3 may not have happened at all in this new Modern Warfare world.
No Battle Royale in Modern Warfare
What about Battle Royale in the new CoD? Battle Royale is still full on trend in 2019 and numerous games are still trying to jump on this bandwagon to secure a piece of the lucrative profit pie.
Call of Duty already has Battle Royale – for example, in the form of Blackout in Black Ops 4 from 2018 or in Call of Duty Mobile from 2019.
However, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will not follow this trend – at least not at launch. The new Modern Warfare will be released without a Battle Royale mode. Instead, the developers want to focus on the traditional multiplayer and its modes.
By the way, if you were hoping for a Zombies mode, you will also be disappointed. There will not be any undead in Modern Warfare.
What about Battle Royale after release? However, Battle Royale for Modern Warfare does not seem to be completely ruled out. Several leaks have already mentioned that the new Call of Duty might also receive a Battle Royale mode later – but only after launch and not immediately.
Modern Warfare brings the largest mode for regular multiplayer
What is Ground War? Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is introducing new formats for its multiplayer part of the game alongside established modes. One of them is the new Ground War mode.
This is what makes Ground War special: In Ground War, you face up to 64 players (32vs32) in large-scale battles, almost in a Battlefield style. Vehicles like Quads, infantry fighting vehicles, or helicopters can also be used.
The maps for Ground War are larger than the usual multiplayer maps. However, gameplay will be with the regular multiplayer loadout – meaning weapons with attachments as well as perks and even killstreaks.
You can find out more about it here: Soon everyone can test the largest MP mode of CoD Modern Warfare
What could still come? By the way: The developers at Infinity Ward are also experimenting with even larger Ground War maps where sometimes 100 players or even more fight against each other. So it is quite possible that even more players will be able to battle it out in this mode soon.
Modern Warfare offers grounded gameplay
What you will search for in vain: If you are looking for meter-high jumps with exo-skeletons, wall runs, crazy futuristic abilities, or specialists with individual super abilities, you are wrong in Modern Warfare 2019.
What to expect in the new CoD: Modern Warfare focuses on realistic weapons and equipment of the present. No operator (soldier) can do anything in multiplayer that another cannot. The focus is on gunplay and the individual skills of the players. Characters are defined by weapon loadouts and perks. Additionally, the gameplay is noticeably slower and less hectic than in the past few years of CoD installments.
In short: If you liked the gameplay flow in Modern Warfare 2 and 3, you should feel at home in the new Modern Warfare 2019.
Modern Warfare sets new standards for weapons
This is how Modern Warfare wants to offer the most realistic weapons in CoD: The reboot of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare places special emphasis on weapons. A tremendous effort has been made in the latest installment regarding optics, animations, sound, physics, and effects so that the firearms feel as real as never before.
The new animations take into account the weight and sway of the weapons in action or simply when standing still. Even small natural muscle movements affect the grip and movements of the firearms.
Moreover, there should be a noticeable difference whether a wall or an enemy is hit by a .50 caliber projectile or a smaller bullet.
A new aiming mechanics will also make it possible to rest your weapon on different surfaces or door frames and thus fire in a more controlled manner.

This is how you can customize weapons in Modern Warfare: Furthermore, it is now possible to customize your weapons to an unprecedented extent in CoD with the Gunsmith feature, aligning them with your play style.

Modern Warfare supports crossplay
This has never happened in Call of Duty: With Modern Warfare 2019, it will be possible for the first time in the history of the “Call of Duty” franchise to play cross-platform with or against each other.
Specifically, this means: Players on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC can spend their time together in Modern Warfare. A clever mechanism is supposed to ensure that PC players with mouse and keyboard do not wipe the floor with console players and their controllers.
Moreover, it seems that cross save can also be used. This means you can essentially play Modern Warfare on any platform you are on. Your progress will then be retained.

With Modern Warfare, loot boxes disappear from Call of Duty
This is what players feared: Especially in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, loot boxes and so-called supply drops left a bitter taste for many fans and players. Massive criticism was repeatedly raised for the aggressive microtransaction policy as well as the loot box mechanics.
With Black Ops 4, the publisher Activision went too far in the eyes of many critics. The game offered more microtransactions, in their opinion, than many free-to-play titles and was far too focused on squeezing as much money out of players as possible.
Weapons that were packed in loot boxes were particularly criticized. The extent of the loot box mechanics and microtransactions only became apparent after the launch of Black Ops 4, which also left many bitter.
Many fans feared that the aggressive loot box model could also continue in Modern Warfare. But that seems to be changing.
This is the situation regarding loot boxes in Modern Warfare: In the new Call of Duty, there will be no more loot boxes and supply drops, as Activision states. There will also be no subsequent integration into the game.
Instead, a seasonal battle pass system will be introduced in Modern Warfare 2019, with which new content can be unlocked or purchased directly and without randomness. All content that affects gameplay will always be unlocked through pure gameplay.
You can find more about this here: Revolution in Call of Duty – Modern Warfare forgoes loot boxes and gets a battle pass
No more season pass – free maps and modes for everyone
This is how new maps worked previously: In previous “Call of Duty” installments, there were usually several paid DLCs that brought new multiplayer maps into the game throughout the year. With a season pass, players could purchase the new content bundle a bit cheaper. But they were still paid.
In Black Ops 4, there was a so-called Black Ops Pass. New maps were only available to its owners. There were no longer any individual sales of DLCs, which made many fans angry as they were forced to make an “all or nothing” decision.
This is how it works in Modern Warfare 2019: In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, this will be different now. There will be no more paid map DLCs, and a season pass is also being eliminated.
All new maps and modes will be released for all players for free after the release of Modern Warfare and will be available simultaneously across all platforms.
In CoD: Modern Warfare, there is no more prestige
This is prestige: So-called prestige ranks were previously a kind of status symbol in the multiplayer of Call of Duty, especially for many hardcore fans.
Once the regular maximum level was reached, players could switch to the prestige levels. Most of the progress was reset to 0, and they started leveling their soldier from scratch. However, there were exclusive badges and emblems as rewards.
These were highly sought after – especially for the maximum prestige level. It was considered a hallmark of endurance and performance in multiplayer.
This is what to expect instead in Modern Warfare: Modern Warfare has no more prestige. Instead, there will be so-called enlisted ranks and seasonal officer ranks.
The enlisted ranks correspond to the previous regular character levels of Call of Duty. There are 55 of them. Once the maximum level is reached here, players can switch to the officer ranks and continue leveling there.
The 100 officer levels are limited to the respective season and will be reset at the end of that season. Players can complete special challenges there and earn special cosmetic rewards.
There is, for example, a special seasonal emblem that evolves with progress within the officer ranks. Once you reach the maximum level of 100, you will receive a special animated emblem that only exists within that respective season. This then serves as proof of ultimate performance during that corresponding season.
