Albion Online
Developer: Sandbox Interactive | Platform: PC, Android, iOS | Release Date: July 17, 2017 | Model: Free2Play with optional subscription | Combat System: Action combat system in isometric perspective
What kind of game is this? Albion Online is a sandbox MMORPG from the German developer Sandbox Interactive. It’s all about your freedom, crafting, and PvP. You create your character without being tied to a class or fixed playstyle.
With this, you explore the world in an isometric perspective, which is divided into various instanced areas and cities. There are also plenty of dungeons that can be randomly generated and found.
While in the early levels, getting familiar with the combat system and crafting plays an important role, the PvP aspect comes into play in the endgame. In the highest areas, there is open PvP and even the possibility of losing your gear in case of death.
If you prefer a more relaxed experience, you can buy your own island and expand it. Housing is also possible.
Despite the PvP, Albion Online has enjoyed great popularity on PC for years. In June 2021, it was released for Android and iOS and even offers crossplay between platforms.
Since the switch to Free2Play in April 2019, the MMORPG has repeatedly set player records. Most recently after the introduction of the first EU server. Player numbers on Steam reached a record high.
Who is it interesting for? Albion Online is clearly aimed at PvP and sandbox fans. There are regularly new seasons and outpost battles are a central part of the game.
You will need to get used to the gear, which you should consider more like potions in other MMORPGs. You use them for your battles to make overall progress in the game.
Cool is that you can use your account both on PC and smartphone. This way, you can tackle difficult challenges on the big screen while taking on smaller farming tasks on your smartphone.
Is there a catch? The graphics and isometric perspective are not to everyone’s liking. Additionally, PvP plays a significant role. Even if you avoid the black areas where there is full loot, it still happens that you have to duel with other players.
Moreover, players who use the optional subscription enjoy minor advantages, including more learning points, silver as loot from mobs, and 50 percent lower taxes in the marketplace.
Is it still worth starting in 2026? Albion Online is a relatively timeless game and allows for entry at any time. Of course, as a beginner, you will fall behind in many aspects, but you can catch up quite quickly, especially when you are exploring dungeons with other players.
Furthermore, you can look forward to regular updates, including events, seasons in PvP, and of course new content in the form of larger updates, with typically 2-3 released per year.
