2. My Lunch with Cox / My Fallen Idol (Season 5 Episode 20/21)
What happens in the episodes? Dr. Cox has 3 patients who urgently need an organ donation. At the last moment, the organs arrive, but it turns out the donor had rabies. All the patients die, and Dr. Cox sinks into alcohol and self-pity.
What makes the episode so good? In the previous seasons, Dr. Cox helped everyone in the hospital. He was the hero who could solve every problem. But now a tragedy has turned the tables. Many characters speak with their fallen idol here, leading to genuine emotional dialogues, even between characters who usually can’t stand each other.
John McGinley delivers a fantastic performance as Dr. Cox in both episodes. You can feel the pain as a viewer. Kudos to Judy Reyes as well, who delivers a wonderful performance despite her brief appearances.
1. My Guilt (Season 3 Episode 14)
What happens in the episode? Jordan’s brother Ben is back because his leukemia worsened. Dr. Cox blames J.D. for a patient’s death, even though he is not responsible. As it turns out, it is Ben who has died, and Cox just does not want to accept it.
What makes the episode so good? This is probably one of the most emotional episodes of Scrubs. Dr. Cox denies reality and Ben’s death. J.D. is an important anchor in this, and the final moment changes the dynamics between Cox and J.D.
Every actor performs excellently in this episode. Not only do Braff and McGinley deliver great performances, but Brendan Fraser, who plays Ben here as a guest, is also really strong. At the same time, the episode is one of the visually strongest. There are great shots and hidden details in the script that foreshadow Ben’s death.
No wonder this episode is regarded as the best on IMDb. It has a fantastic rating of 9.7 out of 10.
