Rank 2: The Battle of the Bastards
- Season: 6
- Episode: 9
- Rating: 9.9/10
In the penultimate episode of Season 6, two great battles rage, which makes the episode twice as good, earning it the second place on this list.
Daenerys returns to Meereen, which is under attack from former slave traders who want to reclaim their city. Initially, Daenerys wants to burn everything down. However, Tyrion brings her to reason. This leads to a meeting with the three masters responsible for the attack. Using her dragons, Daenerys ultimately destroys the entire fleet of attackers and regains control of Meereen. Additionally, Theon and Asha arrive in the city, forming an alliance.
Even more well-known, however, is the Battle of the Bastards, which gives the episode its name. It is considered one of the best battle scenes in all of Game of Thrones and, for many, the climax of the series. It is both politically intriguing as well as action-packed, chaotic, brutal, and excellently staged.
Jon Snow leads his troops against Ramsay Bolton, who occupies Winterfell. The situation seems hopeless, but then Sansa appears with the army from the Vale. Ramsay is defeated, and Sansa can finally take her revenge on him.
Fun Fact: The scene where Jon is overwhelmed by the Bolton cavalry was filmed with real horses without the aid of visual effects. To ensure the safety of all involved, shallow trenches were dug to define the paths of the horses. In total, 80 horses, 600 crew members, 500 extras, and 65 stunt performers were involved in the shoot.
