Rank 6: The Lion and the Rose
- Season: 4
- Episode: 2
- Rating: 9.7/10
One of the most hated characters in Game of Thrones is probably the spoiled Joffrey Lannister. So it’s no wonder that the episode of his dramatic demise is so popular.
At the “Purple Wedding,” King Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell are to be married. The celebrations are lavish and at times rather tasteless. For example, five dwarfs dressed as kings reenact the War of the Five Kings. Tyrion in particular finds little to laugh about. He mocks Joffrey and is punished by being appointed as Joffrey’s cupbearer.
After a few sips of wine, Joffrey suddenly has a coughing fit, spits blood, and turns blue-purple. Shortly thereafter, he is dead. The main suspect is, of course, Tyrion, although the cunning Olenna Tyrell is actually the one who slipped the poison into the wine.
Fun Fact: In the end credits of the episode, a version of “The Rains of Castamere” by the Icelandic rock band Sigur Rós can be heard. The band members actually appear in the episode as musicians at Joffrey’s wedding.
