What is PUBG? With PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), the BR genre really took off in 2017. The game was developed by the namesake PlayerUnknown, the Irish modder Brendan Greene. He essentially invented the genre by developing mods for the military shooter ARMA.
PUBG therefore relies on the basic formula of the BR genre: 100 players parachute unarmed onto an island and must arm themselves and kill each other until only one (or one team) remains. Over time, the successful formula has been supplemented with additional maps, and after games like Fortnite set the standard, PUBG now also features quirky skins and battle passes as well as events.
In terms of gameplay, PUBG is less fast-paced than Fortnite or even Apex Legends or Warzone. Here, it is about tactically smart and methodical approaches. Additionally, you need to organize your inventory, upgrade your weapons, and pay attention to the correct trajectory and deviations when shooting. Wild shooting is less of a theme here.
What is the current state of the game? PUBG was once the top dog in the genre and boasted over half a million viewers on Twitch at its peak. However, there is now a lot of competition, and PUBG has had to take a hit. It is still actively played, attracting around 15,000 viewers on average in July 2020.
