A monster stands out in Pokémon GO this month, and many trainers may not have it on their radar: Meltan! We reveal to you why this mysterious monster is the Pokémon of the month.
Why is Meltan so important right now? The mysterious Pokémon Meltan currently benefits from a change that was decided this month: More XL Candies for legendary and mysterious Pokémon.
You can earn up to 6 XL Candies per Meltan and additionally the 3 regular candies. Since you receive Meltan through the mystery box anyway, where you can easily catch at least 60 Meltan, you quickly gather plenty of XL Candies.
If things go really well, you can already gather enough candies and XL Candies with just 2 mystery boxes to push Meltan from level 1 to level 50. However, keep in mind that you can only obtain XL Candies starting from level 40. Before that, you only get regular candies.
Meltan originates from the 8th generation and was meant to establish the connection between Pokémon GO and the then-new Let’s GO games.
Meltan in Pokémon GO – Benefits from XL Candies
How can you get Meltan? The mysterious Pokémon appears once through a special research task. After that, you can only get it via the mystery box. There are currently 2 ways to get it:
- You trade a Pokémon from Pokémon GO to the Switch game Let’s GO, Eevee/Pikachu
- You connect with the new cloud service Pokémon Home. If you interact there, you will also receive a mystery box for Meltan

The mystery box works similarly to incense. When you use it, a kind of aura surrounds you, attracting Meltan for one hour. No other Pokémon will be attracted, allowing you to catch Meltan in a relaxed manner during those 60 minutes.
If you do not have Pokémon Home or the Switch game Let’s GO, Eevee/Pikachu, you can also connect with a friend’s Switch game. You will also need to transfer a Pokémon there to receive the mystery box.
This is how it went for me this month: I personally activated a mystery box right after the change with the XL Candies. In doing so, I received a full 6 XL Candies for each Meltan. As a result, I now have a proud 360 XL Candies after just one mystery box. More than enough to evolve Melmetal to level 50.
If I compare this to other Pokémon and the opportunities to earn XL Candies there, it’s a stark difference. Here, I have to catch hundreds of monsters of a type to get enough XL Candies. The hour of effort with Meltan is simply incomparable.
Is Meltan worth it at all? Meltan can evolve into Melmetal and thus become a very strong Pokémon. Melmetal is particularly useful in the PvP League and can also be used against Team Rocket bosses with the right moves.
However, in raids, there are better alternatives to Melmetal. However, you can also use it quite well as a gym defender. There, a specimen at level 50 is even stronger and takes more damage.
