Will multiplayer fans also get their money’s worth in the new God of War 4? The answer was provided by Game Director Cory Barlog in an interview with a Spanish site: No. We explain why the current God of War title will not have a multiplayer mode.
Currently, we are receiving an increasing number of inquiries from interested fans asking whether multiplayer enthusiasts will have something to do in God of War 4 and whether we will cover the game in our reporting on MeinMMO.
A year ago, a job posting from Sony Entertainment Santa Monica had rekindled the hopes of many fans that after God of War Ascension, the upcoming God of War would also feature a multiplayer mode.
However, these hopes were dashed by Game Director Cory Barlog in an interview with the Spanish site Level Up back in summer 2016.
That is why the next God of War installment is not for multiplayer fans.
The story of the new God of War is clearly in focus
The emphasis of the game has clearly been placed by the developers on the single-player campaign and the related story. The relationship between Kratos – the old God of War – and his new son is central to this.
This is also the reason why, according to Cory Barlog, there will be no multiplayer mode in the new God of War title.
Furthermore, the pure single-player focus of the game may have been influenced by experiences from the multiplayer of God of War Ascension. Although the multiplayer mode turned out to be a nice addition to the main game in retrospect, it was too immature and confusing.
Most critics agreed at the time that the developers should have invested their creativity in the solo part and the story of the game rather than putting energy and resources into a multiplayer attachment that was at best average.
What does this mean for God of War fans at MeinMMO?
Although we have many PS4 readers and even if the new God of War could be one of the best exclusive PlayStation titles of all time, we unfortunately will not cover this game.
The focus of MeinMMO is clearly on multiplayer games, MMOs, and games-as-a-service. However, the upcoming God of War unfortunately does not fall into any of these categories, making meaningful inclusion in our coverage impossible.
There is also little hope for a multiplayer expansion in the future. There is no season pass and no indication from the developers that they plan to expand this game with content in the long term. Therefore, only a story DLC can be expected at most.
