At gamescom 2019, we were able to experience the new Coop game mode in Star Wars: Battlefront 2 for the first time. Our author Jürgen had an amazing amount of fun and it’s ideal for everyone who has not been convinced by Battlefront 2 so far.
What is Coop in Battlefront 2? At gamescom 2019, the previously suspected new Coop game mode was showcased. Here, 4 players along with support from AI soldiers battle against an endless number of bots.
The goal is to skillfully maneuver the opponents and capture tactical points. This way, the front line is pushed further back until either the final point is captured or time runs out.
As usual in Battlefront 2, you earn points through kills and achievements, which you can then use to buy vehicles, special classes, or even heroes.
This is how Battlefront 2 is fun
This is how Coop plays: I, Jürgen, often have trouble getting “into it” during short demo sessions of new games. But here it was different. The action started immediately and I was right in the middle of it. We played on the side of the Separatists and fought against the Clone Troopers of the Republic.
As expected from Battlefront, it was booming and bustling in every corner. Clone Troopers were running around, blaster shots whizzed through the air, and my comrades were falling like flies around me.
I returned fire and a wild battle ensued over a control point. The clones continually stormed our positions and I racked up kill after kill.
Why is Coop so much fun? Unlike in regular Battlefront 2, where an average shooter player often faces superior opponents and achieves little, you can take down bots by the dozen here if you somewhat understand the game.
So you collect remarkably many kills and can even play as a special character or hero. An honor that I hardly received in regular PvP of Battlefront 2.
Thus, Dennis Brannvall, Design Director at the developer, described the new mode in a conversation with me as follows: “Coop is ideal for players who love our game but are not good at it.” So fans who appreciate the grand Star Wars atmosphere of the game but are not particularly good PvP shooter players or simply prefer PvE battles.
The difficulty in Coop mode lies more in capturing the points in time and especially in surviving the late game. Because then the opponents also come more frequently with special heroes, and even an AI Yoda dispatches simple battle droids with ease.
This creates real pressure towards the end and you really feel like you are participating in an epic space war. Exactly what has always been the great feature in Battlefront 2. Only now, Coop fans can join in and enjoy it as well.
What’s next? In further conversations, Dennis Brennvall revealed to us that, in addition to the four planets Naboo, Kamino, Geonosis, and Kashyyyk, they also want to bring the mushroom planet Felucia as a map for Coop. The settings are always the Clone Wars, where clones battle against droids.
However, they definitely want to bring additional maps for Coop in the future, also in the settings of the classic trilogy and possibly also for the upcoming Episode 9 in December.
When is Coop coming? According to Dennis Brennvall, the Coop update should arrive on September 25. There will also be another elite class, the Clone Commando. He fights at short range and heals himself through kills.
Conclusion: For me, Battlefront 2 has always been a game that I wanted to love but never really warmed up to. It looked great and offered top Star Wars atmosphere. However, the gameplay was too hectic for me, and the other players were usually too good.
Therefore, I often hovered at the bottom of the ranking list and lost very often. This quickly spoiled my fun and Battlefront 2 was off my drive again. However, with the new Coop mode, that should change soon.
Here, I can finally enjoy the wonderful atmosphere, take down bots in droves, and even regularly run around as a cool elite character or hero. Now I just hope that the developers will soon bring Coop settings from the classic trilogy or the new films into the game, because the prequel trilogy is not among my favorites.
