Fortnite: Battle Royale is actually a free-to-play game that has so far been distributed purely digitally. However, in November 2018, there is supposed to be a physical retail version for the first time.
What is the retail version of Fortnite all about? Just in time for the Christmas shopping season, Fortnite is set to hit stores in a physical box. Inside are codes for special items. These would be:
- Frostbite Outfit: A cool recolor of the legendary Raptor skin.
- Freezing Point Back Bling: A backpack in snow camo.
- Cold Front Glider: A standard glider in snow camouflage.
- Chill-Axe Pickaxe: A pickaxe with serrated edges.
Additionally, there are 1,000 V-Bucks, the real-money currency of Fortnite, included in the bundle. These are worth another 10 euros. The Xbox version also includes a disc with Fortnite.
What is NOT included in the box: The PvE version of Fortnite. Save the World is still available separately but is expected to be free soon as well.
What is the cost of the bundle? The Fortnite box is currently advertised for $29.99. In euros, the price is likely to be the same. Whether the bundle will also be available locally is still unclear. However, we asked Epic and will update this article when we know more.
Which platforms is the bundle for? The box version of Fortnite is only for players on the consoles PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. PC, iOS, and Android users unfortunately miss out.
The bundle is also expected to be available in the digital Fortnite shop.
When will the bundle be released? Both versions of the bundle will be released on November 13, 2018.
Is the package worth it? If you really want the skin, you will benefit with the 1,000 V-Bucks included in the bundle. Because the skin would cost 20 euros as a legendary outfit if it were available in the shop. You would then receive the pickaxe and the glider as a bonus.
Why is a free-to-play game being sold?
Epic and the Christmas season: What sense does it make to sell a game that you can download for free? Apart from the skins, the Christmas sales likely play an important role.
After all, Fortnite is extremely popular with kids. Therefore, Fortnite is likely to be on many wish lists. If Grandma or Grandpa want to give a gift to the little one and ask in the store for “Fortnite,” the salesperson does not have to explain that the game is free but can sell them the bundle instead.
A box that you can hold in your hands – even if it ultimately only contains codes – makes a bigger impression than handing kids a few dollars for new skins. Therefore, the Fortnite box is likely to be under many Christmas trees in 2018.
