The big Undermountain update has been released for the MMORPG Neverwinter. The many changes to gameplay have already led to heated discussions.
What does the update bring? Module 16: Undermountain not only introduces a new campaign to the MMORPG, but also brings larger changes.
- Explore the huge dungeon of Undermountain, where you will meet the insane wizard Halaster Blackcloak.
- Expeditions with repeatable quests.
- A revamp of classes, talents, powers, boons, and more.
- The rewards have been revised.
- The companion system has undergone a redesign.
- Three weekly quests for endgame.
- Level cap raised to 80.

A controversial update
When will Undermountain be playable? You can now dive into the adventures on PC. On PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, it starts on June 11.
Why is the update so controversial? The changes to classes, talents, and powers represent a significant intervention in the underlying game system.
The changes are so profound that, according to some fans, Neverwinter plays noticeably differently. Some adjustments are designed in such a way that veterans find the complexity lacking.
There were already fears during the testing phase that Undermountain could “destroy” the MMORPG.
What are the biggest criticisms? The game’s community is already heavily discussing the changes on Reddit. The beta version already garnered much criticism. The same is true for the released version of Undermountain.
- The scaling: High-level players can no longer “farm” in easy areas. The difficulty is automatically adjusted to the level. No matter how strong you are, even weaker opponents always pose a challenge.
- Builds hardly matter: Basically, every class has the same chance, so it is now more or less irrelevant what you play.
- Cooldowns take too long: Having to wait 30 seconds for the cooldown of powers leads to sluggish gameplay.
- Healing: Constant healing of the group is necessary, and buffs have been removed, causing healers to hardly do anything else but heal. It becomes significantly harder for solo players to progress without a healer.
Fans are divided in opinion
How are fans reacting to the new update? There is a barrage of criticism. And that has been the case since the testing phase. Players are not only disappointed with the changes that shake up the entire game, but especially that the developers are not responding to feedback.
EtherealEtiquette writes on Reddit: “Asking for feedback but not listening to it shows a lack of transparency. This gambles away trust, and that’s not easily regained!”
But there are also positive voices defending the changes. According to some players, the update was necessary as Neverwinter has been around for six years and needed to become more attractive and modern for newcomers.
kellemaniac argues in the official forum: “The most important point remains that a 6-year-old game is receiving a complete overhaul, which is better than minimal content revisions or boring re-occurring events. I am absolutely satisfied with the changes.”
Neverwinter has changed with the new update “Undermountain”. Time will tell whether this was for the better of the MMORPG.
