WoW Classic has received a test realm, sparking discussions and speculation. Are new contents coming? Or what does Blizzard want to test?
If you currently look at the different versions of World of Warcraft in the Battle.net app, you will find a new entry there for several hours now. In addition to the current World of Warcraft and WoW: Classic, there is now also the menu item “PTR: World of Warcraft Classic” – a test realm for the Classic version. This fuels speculation in the forums and leads to many theories. The wildest of them hope for new contents or significant balancing, but the truth could be much more sober.
This is what fans hope for: In the WoW Classic subreddit, wild speculation has broken out about what a test realm could mean. The existing theories include:
- Major balancing changes for the classes
- Changes to Alterac Valley for more fairness and a playstyle that better corresponds with “the spirit of Classic” – many find that silly at the moment
- Completely new contents for WoW based on the wishes of “Classic+”
This is more likely: The truth about the test realm is likely to be a bit more sober. The next phases of World of Warcraft Classic will bring several major innovations that should be extensively tested first. These include:
- The Arathi Basin as a new battleground for 15vs15 players
- Zul’Gurub as a raid dungeon for smaller groups (20 players)
- The opening event of Ahn’Qiraj
Why does Ahn’Qiraj need a test? Especially the opening event of Ahn’Qiraj is likely to undergo a larger test this time. It is a major event that takes place only once per realm. The entire server must gather countless resources to then open the gates to the ruins. The event is “legendary” because it has caused problems and bugs almost every time. Realms have often crashed, and there have been bizarre incidents where ships did not take their usual route but instead sailed through other areas.
It would be possible that we could experience the event of Ahn’Qiraj in a bug-free version for the first time in WoW Classic, provided the servers can hold up.
Currently, the PTR cannot be accessed, so a final statement cannot be made. However, it would be wise to keep hopes for major “innovations” low. That would hardly fit with Blizzard’s current approach.
