“Finally a new Mario movie,” that’s probably something no one heard anyone say when a new animated film of the plumber brothers was actually announced at the Nintendo Direct. In fact, tens of thousands of Reddit users are not celebrating the film, but the scathingly judgmental laughter of YouTuber VideoGameDunkey (via YouTube.com).
This is the new Mario movie: In yesterday’s Nintendo Direct (via YouTube.com), Nintendo announced the first feature film since 1993. Back then, real actors were still jumping around in Mario costumes through futuristic sets. With the new film, Nintendo does not want to make that mistake again and is therefore working on an animated film. Nevertheless, the first announcement has led to mockery, derision, and many laughs.
It seems the choice of voice cast is to blame, at least if we consider the opinion of YouTuber VideoGameDunkey and the Reddit community. Dunkey could barely contain himself during the first announcement of the Mario movie, bursting into loud laughter.

Who is Dunkey? VideoGameDunkey is a U.S. YouTuber who uploads creatively edited gameplay videos in his gaming content. He also humorously covers glitches in video games, trash games, or controversies surrounding a new release.
This is how devastating (and funny) Dunkey’s reaction is: The Twitch clip showing Dunkey’s live reaction to the Mario movie speaks for itself: The U.S. YouTuber watches eagerly, hoping for a cool animated film about Super Mario.
The word “Cool” is only used by Dunkey when he finds out that Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) voices Mario. Nintendo announced Chris Pratt’s role with the following words:
He is so cool, Mario will speak a lot in the film!
After that sentence, the YouTuber loses it completely, unable to suppress his laughter. Even the further casting does not change his opinion, and especially the casting of Donkey Kong made him almost explode. Donkey Kong is voiced by Seth Rogen, who enjoys a rather mixed reputation in the States.
This is what users are saying on Reddit: The Reddit post (via reddit.com), in which the Twitch clip was shared, has already surpassed 20,000 upvotes in just 12 hours. For many of these users, the YouTuber’s judgment is just a reflection of their own opinion. Some users even thought that the announcement of the film was a joke:

Other users believe that the new Mario movie can be good: Jack Black is for them a fantastic choice for Bowser and also Keegan-Michael Key (Key and Peele) as Toad is liked by them:
Jack Black could actually be a good Bowser: At least he has the right voice and can surely pull it off humorously.
