The distribution of items in Teamfight Tactics is the biggest point of criticism from many players. Riot Games aims to address this with Patch 9.18 by introducing more randomness into the game.
What will change about the item distribution? In addition to the 11 new items that are set to be introduced with the update, developers also plan to revise the loot boxes from NPC creatures.
This means that NPCs will drop boxes of varying rarity. These boxes will contain items, gold, champions, and the item Neeko’s Help.
Why is this change being made? Lead Designer Mortdog explained in the forum that this change aims to make TFT more exciting, but also fairer.
The reason for this is a newly adjusted loot table which will provide developers with greater control.
More control leads to more fairness
What changes will be made to the boxes in general? There will be three types of boxes in the future:
- Common boxes contain: gold, champions, or Neeko’s Help
- Uncommon boxes contain: item components, gold, champions, or Neeko’s Help
- Rare boxes contain: spatula, complete items, gold, champions, or Neeko’s Help
The rarer a box is, the better its contents will be. Players should be able to tell when a box drops whether they can look forward to opening it or not.
What changes will be made to the loot tables for the boxes? In the current version of Teamfight Tactics, it can happen that after the first 3 PvE rounds you have 9 gold and not a single item.
The new system is supposed to provide more control because developers will adjust the tables and also because more items will be in the boxes. Overall, this should reduce blowouts, where a player can have 6 items after 3 PvE rounds.
Moreover, Mortdog mentions that an early 2-star Kennen could have even more impact on the game in the mid-game than a new item.
When will the changes be implemented? The changes to NPC boxes are planned for Patch 9.18. Accordingly, you can already test the adjustments on the PBE.
The release of Patch 9.18 is scheduled for Wednesday, September 11. It will be released two weeks after Patch 9.17, which brought us Pantheon.
On Mein-MMO, you will find various guides on TFT. In one of them, we reveal which items stack and which do not:
