Developer Riot Games has released new information about LoL Auto Chess Teamfight Tactics. This includes current player numbers and plans for the future.
How many play TFT? Every month, according to official statements, more than 33 million people play Teamfight Tactics. In the past 30 days, this amounts to more than 720 million hours of gameplay.
The release of the Auto Battler has increased the number of users of League of Legends by 30%, which has been consistently maintained since then. TFT has played a significant role in making LoL currently the most popular PC game in the world.
How does TFT compare to other game modes? Over the years, new game modes like URF or ARAM have been released in League of Legends.
Riot compares the player numbers at the release of each mode in a chart. TFT (blue line) performs very well:
Only the URF mode generated a larger hype at release, but it was only available for a limited time. The also popular ARAM mode lagged significantly behind TFT at least at launch.
Entering the competitive scene in 2020
What does TFT plan for the future? To ensure Teamfight Tactics remains relevant for the future, Riot plans to create a competitive scene in 2020.
Currently, four times as many players play ranked compared to unranked in TFT. Interest in competing in the game is reportedly very high, especially in Korea.
A step for this would be the introduction of a spectator mode, which according to the lead designer is already a high priority.
What about further updates? Just on Wednesday, the new Patch 9.19 for TFT was released. This brought 9 new items and a new champion.
This is supposed to complete the “first set” of Teamfight Tactics. In October, the developers want to give insights into what has been learned and present the “second set”.
In this case, sets likely refer to rotations. For TFT, new champions are to be developed, while old ones are simultaneously removed, so that in the end there aren’t too many game pieces. However, these will come back in later rotations.
