A team of students in Norway has qualified for a giant tournament for Rainbow Six Siege, despite having little experience in the game.
This is what happened: A team of five students has qualified for one of the largest eSports events in Scandinavia. The five will compete at the Dreamhack Winter 2018 in Sweden in a tournament with a prize pool of $50,000.
However, the guys are playing Rainbow Six Siege in the tournament, and that is a game in which they have little experience.
One of the players said before the group draw: “We are five guys who have barely played R6S, and we are just waiting to see if we have to face G2, Liquid, or other professional teams.”
School Trip to DreamHack
This is how it came about: The students attend a community college in Norway. As a class trip, they are going to DreamHack in Sweden this weekend, to one of the largest LAN parties in the world.
The guys actually play CS:GO together. However, to play in the tournament at DreamHack, you need an invitation. The tournament for Rainbow Six Siege, on the other hand, had an open qualification.
So the guys casually signed up for Rainbow Six Siege. They thought they would be eliminated quickly in the preliminary rounds and have fun while doing so. However, since too few teams had registered for the open qualification, the qualification was canceled at short notice.
The students automatically qualified for the top eSports tournament and were assigned to group “C”.
Will this be an eSports fairy tale? As Kotaku reports, the student team has already lost the first match without scoring a point.
It does not look like we will have a Cinderella story here, where an inexperienced team suddenly defeats the professionals, and in 20 years we see a movie like “Cool Runnings” on free TV.
But it will probably be a school trip that the team will remember.
