The new expansion Legacy of the Sith was supposed to be released in December 2021 to coincide with the 10th anniversary of Star Wars: The Old Republic. However, the release has now been delayed by nearly 2 months. The developers state that they need more time to complete it. However, many contents will be available on the test server this week.
When will the new expansion be released? Legacy of the Sith was introduced in summer 2021 and the release was scheduled for next Tuesday, December 14. However, there will now be a significant delay.
The expansion is now set to be released on February 15, 2022; 2 months later than originally planned.
The developers explain in a blog post that they need more time to meet their expectations:
The team has been working very hard on Legacy of the Sith for some time, but the closer we got to the launch date, the clearer it became that we needed more time.
To ensure that we deliver the experience as we envision it and that you deserve, we are currently focusing on thoroughly testing the many areas of the game that we have changed.

The previous expansion Onslaught, which was released in 2019, was also delayed shortly before its release.
Do players now have to wait until 2022? Not really, as some contents were already playable on the PTR. Additionally, another update is supposed to be released next week, bringing all content – except for the story missions – to the test server.
So anyone wishing to explore new areas or test mechanics can theoretically do so in December, but progress will not carry over to the final game.

Fans anticipated the delay
How is the announcement being received? Many users on reddit commented that they expected the delay. It seems there were several issues on the PTR. Furthermore, not all contents have been brought to the test servers yet and there was simply too little PR for the expansion for some users (via reddit):
- Chriches1984 writes: “I was waiting for it because it just wasn’t finished yet. Anyone who used the PTR knew that, but what worries me is that Bioware only released it a week before launch.”
- PedleTwins, on the other hand, is relieved about the delay: “I’m glad. Better a delayed release than a faulty one.”
- User MaximumButthurt was surprised about the lack of PR: “Yeah, that wasn’t the hype you’d expect from a big release… probably because the reactions to the tests were mostly negative.”
Some users had already predicted a delay for the expansion in early November.
Expansion brings new content for veterans and should mark the start of a series of events
What’s included in Legacy of the Sith? The new expansion offers several contents, including:
- The new max level 80
- New story contents, including on the planet Manaan
- The new flashpoint Ruins of a Sith Fortress
- A revision of drops, so that randomness is to be almost completely excluded
- The introduction of the legendary equipment
- A review of class combat styles
- The operation R-4 anomaly, which will be released with patch 7.1 after the release
Furthermore, the new expansion should kick off a series of events, including one specifically for returnees and newcomers. Whether this will now take place in January or will also be delayed is currently unknown.
What do you think about the delay? Were you looking forward to the expansion or can you easily wait until February?
