BioWare introduces a new type of character customization in SWTOR , weapon tuning.
New, flashy color effects – SWTOR’s weapon tuning
The ability to continually customize your character in an MMORPG to make it a unique snowflake in the digital expanse is one of the most important revenue sources for many games. Star Wars: The Old Republic is no exception, as it also has a comprehensive system that includes costumes and other visual tweaks like coloring clothing.
These systems will further expand with the Chapter XIII of Knights of the Fallen Empire, “Loot and Profit”. With the patch, there will be a new “weapon tuning”. Some weapons have an additional slot where an upgrade can be installed – it works just like all other modifications in the game.
However, this weapon tuning is purely cosmetic, providing no stat boosts. Instead, they equip the weapon with lightning effects that look flashy on both lightsabers as well as blasters and cannons. It’s as if the technician was careless when crafting the weapon and is now desperately trying to prevent it from exploding.
Not all weapons have such a tuning slot, but suitable war gear can be obtained from various sources (raids, reputation, cartel market).
The controversy: The weapon tunings will initially only be available in cartel packs – they are thus random. Although they can also be resold in the trading network (auction house), fans are always dissatisfied when something is “only” available by chance.
Mein-MMO says: After having just admitted that there were minor bugs and larger problems upon the release of chapters that they now want to avoid, such an announcement seems somewhat out of place. Fans have voiced significant criticism that they are receiving less content for more money, along the lines of “13 euros do not justify a 20-minute chapter.” It does seem somewhat surprising that a new feature is coming that can – more or less – only be used through the purchase of cartel packs.
