In the SF-MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, short SWTOR, the future is secured. The license to operate in the Star Wars universe is granted. Bioware is excited about the new film trilogy.
When it became clear that Star Wars would reshape its own “universe”, known as the canon, and declare everything that did not happen in the movies or the TV animated series as a kind of second-tier story, to which one did not feel truly bound, many MMO fans thought: “Oh, oh, this is not good for Star Wars: The Old Republic.” It was even speculated whether the somewhat older SWTOR could be phased out to start a new MMO with the new film trilogy. But that seems to be off the table.
The US site mmorpg.com had the opportunity to visit Bioware. There, James Ohlen, the Creative Director, explained the licensing situation. The contract for Star Wars: The Old Republic is now bundled under the general contract between EA, Disney, and Lucasfilms. And it is “ongoing”, meaning continuous. They are very happy with how the prospects for SWTOR look and are excited about the next film trilogy. It is an exciting time.
Already, there are plans for 4.0, the next expansion, and a head full of ideas about what more could be told in SWTOR. The next expansion, “Shadow of Revan”, is just around the corner.
