Sword Art Online with real actors? That’s exactly what Netflix is now planning to implement. Fans can look forward to an exciting series.
Anime is becoming increasingly mainstream, so it is not surprising that more and more successful anime series are also getting live-action adaptations.
The story of Sword Art Online is now taking this path. Netflix has announced the production, which will presumably be available on the streaming service in at least two years.
Sword Art Online, or short SAO, takes place in the future and primarily revolves around the boy Kirito, who enjoys spending his time in virtual worlds. Thanks to new technology, it is possible to fully immerse in the fantasy worlds, allowing bodily signals to be intercepted and transformed into digital signals.
But on the first day in the MMORPG SAO, an incident occurs: players can no longer log out. The creator of the game then reveals that players can only leave the game if they defeat the final boss. Those who die on the way lose their lives in the real world as well.
The representation is based on the anime series
Producer Laeta Kalogridis explained in an interview with Collider that they do not want to engage in “whitewashing” for SAO – Asian characters will be portrayed by Asian actors.
Sword Art Online has already received several video game adaptations, mainly JRPGs – an actual MMO is still pending. Next, Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet will be released, which is based on the second season of the anime series and takes place in the MMO Gun Gale Online.
Cortyn says: After the rather disappointing adaptation of “Death Note”, I am more than critical about a live-action adaptation of Sword Art Online. It’s about time that anime and manga adaptations get higher quality live adaptations, but we have been waiting for that with video games for almost two decades. I hope for the best and fear for the worst.
